(CLO) US President Donald Trump threatened to impose large-scale sanctions on Russia on Friday (March 7, 2025), days after suspending military aid and intelligence support to Ukraine.
In a social media post, President Donald Trump stated: "Based on the fact that Russia is 'aggressively attacking' Ukraine on the battlefield, I am considering imposing large-scale banking sanctions, trade sanctions, and tariffs on Russia until a ceasefire and a final peace agreement are reached."
He also urged: "Russia and Ukraine, sit down at the negotiating table now, before it's too late. Thank you!!!"

Currently, the Russian army has virtually surrounded thousands of Ukrainian soldiers in the Russian Kursk region. Open-source maps show that Russia has almost split Ukrainian forces in two and cut off the main supply lines in the area.
Pasi Paroinen, a military analyst at the Finland-based Black Bird Group, stated: "The situation (of Ukraine in Kursk) is very bad."
President Zelenskiyy said he will travel to Saudi Arabia next Monday (March 11) to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, ahead of talks between US and Ukrainian officials there later this week.
Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, has been conducting extensive talks with Russian officials. He confirmed that a meeting with Ukrainian officials is scheduled for next week in Saudi Arabia to discuss a framework for a peace agreement aimed at ending the three-year war.
