Today, August 31, the Ramon Magsaysay Prize Foundation, considered the "Nobel Prize of Asia", has just announced the 5 winners of this year's award, in a global online event. The 66th Ramon Magsaysay Prize ceremony will be held on November 16, at the Metropolitan Theater in Manila, Philippines.

Honoring Vietnamese doctor who made many contributions to research on the harmful effects of Agent Orange

The Ramon Magsaysay Award Organizing Committee honored Vietnamese doctor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, who has made many contributions because she devoted her life to researching to find the truth and the devastation of Agent Orange on human health, reproductive health of victims of Agent Orange/dioxin, and pursuing justice for victims of Agent Orange/dioxin. The Board of Members of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation has unanimously decided to select Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong as one of five individuals and organizations to receive the 66th Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2024. "Ms. Phuong said that she first came into contact with this poison in the late 1960s as a resident physician, when she assisted in the births of babies with severe birth defects due to the long-term effects of this extremely toxic chemical. Her work is a serious warning to the world to avoid war at all costs because its tragic consequences can last far into the future. She is proof that it is never too late to right the wrongs of war and regain justice and relief for its unfortunate victims," according to the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong (born in 1944) is a famous Vietnamese medical scientist. Professor Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong is currently the Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, President of the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (HOSREM), Vice President of the Vietnam Obstetrics and Gynecology Association (VAGO). She is the former Director of Tu Du Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City), former Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Heart Institute, former Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Ho Chi Minh City, former President of the Vietnam-US Friendship Association in Ho Chi Minh City. She was also a member of the 7th National Assembly , Vice President of the 8th National Assembly, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee from 1992 to 1997. She was awarded the title of Labor Hero, People's Physician and the Third Class Labor Medal by the State.

The Rural Doctors Movement, a group of Thai doctors, won the prize for "decades of struggle... to ensure adequate and affordable health care for people, especially the rural poor in Thailand". “By protecting the rural poor, the movement has ensured that no one is left behind as the country moves towards further economic prosperity and modernization,” the report said.

To date, the foundation has awarded 322 individuals and 26 organizations that make up the Magsaysay Award community. The Magsaysay Award is considered Asia’s most prestigious and highest honor. The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation is currently celebrating its 65th year of honoring greatness and transformative leadership. The award comes with a certificate and a medal bearing the image of President Magsaysay, an inscription indicating the basis for selecting the awardees, and a cash prize.
