With over 192 km of coastline, Lam Dong province boasts not only beautiful beaches such as Cam Binh, Ke Ga, Tien Thanh, Mui Ne, Phan Ri Cua, Binh Thanh, and Phu Quy special economic zone, but also a wide variety of seafood including crabs, scad, boxfish, snapper, grouper, conch, fragrant snails, octopus, etc., satisfying the culinary needs of tourists.
1. I had just arrived in Phan Rí Cửa, and an acquaintance took me to visit the harbor, where many boats were returning with catches of fish, shrimp, clams, crabs, etc., from the sea. Across the Hòa Phú bridge, fishermen had gathered a large pile of clams, about several tons, with many women sitting and shucking them. Phan Rí Cửa is famous for its scallops. A large number of boats in the area specialize in diving to catch scallops to extract the meat (the tastiest part of the scallop) to supply supermarkets and food processing companies, while others supply tourist destinations in the province and other provinces.
Ms. Nga, a scallop buyer supplying the domestic market, said: "Most scallops are found in the Lam Dong sea area, but the best ones are from the Phan Ri Cua sea area, caught by divers. Their meat is white, firm, large, and sweet, making them a popular choice for restaurants and tourist destinations to include on their menus..." Mr. Tuan, who runs a well-known seafood restaurant on Hung Vuong Street, Phu Thuy Ward, said that his family usually imports scallops, conch, razor clams, and sea bugs from Phan Ri Cua because the meat is delicious and less sand-laden than other areas, making them easier to prepare. Tourists really enjoy grilled scallops with scallions and lard; almost every 100 groups of customers who come to his seafood restaurant order grilled scallops with scallions and lard as their first dish. The grilled scallops must be from diving scallops, which the locals call "flying scallops," some as large as a rice bowl. This type usually doesn't have sand clinging to its meat, so grilling them whole results in a sweet, fragrant, and fatty flavor that harmonizes well for everyone's taste...
2. It was just past 5 a.m., still misty, but hundreds of tourists were already standing on the shore of Cam Binh beach watching fishermen cast their nets, catch crabs and shellfish. Small basket boats and canoes, about 300-500 meters from the shore, cast their nets, creating a surreal scene as they moved across the rippling waves. Every now and then, a few basket boats would pull their nets ashore, their catches a variety of seafood including herring, scad, mackerel, and a few boxfish struggling as they were brought ashore. Once the nets were pulled ashore, tourists and even small seafood vendors from the markets would gather to select their catch of fish, shrimp, shellfish, crabs, and more.
People choose whatever they like; many tourists, seeing live fish caught in the nets, point and say, "I'll take that one, weigh it and sell it to me"... Nearby, the next net is pulled up, this one has more crabs, so those who like to eat crabs flock to buy them. The scene on the beach that morning is as lively as a festival.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh from Tay Ninh, who was on a family vacation in Lam Dong, said: "Seafood is sold everywhere these days, but seeing people cast their nets from the sea and then choosing their own fish, crabs, and shellfish... it's a really unique feeling." Mr. Dinh Hung, on a trip to La Gi, said: "My whole family loves coming here in the morning to watch the locals catch fish. The kids, who usually sleep in, were so excited to come along when they heard we were going to Cam Binh beach in the morning..." As he spoke, Mr. Hung pointed to the children choosing shellfish and crabs with their mother: "Look, the mother and children bought all sorts of things and then went back to the hotel to have them boiled and eaten. It was incredibly delicious..."
During the rainy season, a large amount of water flows from rivers and streams into the sea, carrying food with it. As a result, various types of seafood congregate near the shore to hunt for prey. From June to November, the abundant food from river and stream flows into the sea means that most seafood, from fish to crabs and snails, are plumper and sweeter than during the dry season.
3. In the coastal region of Lam Dong, there are many places selling fresh seafood. Besides Mui Ne fishing village, Mui Ne market, and Phan Thiet market, tourists can buy live crabs, snails, and swimming fish at several fresh seafood stalls located in Xuan Huong ward - Da Lat, Ward 1 Bao Loc, etc. There are many reasons why more and more tourists visit the coastal region of Lam Dong and stay for longer periods, one of which is the abundance and quality of seafood thanks to ocean currents and weather. The high quality of fresh seafood, combined with both rustic and sophisticated preparation methods, creates a diverse and distinctive coastal cuisine, such as: grilled scallops with scallions and lard, sea snail salad, sea snail curry, devilfish curry, hot pot, grouper hot pot, snapper salad, and fried catfish with lard...
Hundreds of delicious seafood dishes from Lam Dong province are in season; come to the coast of Lam Dong to enjoy the seafood!
