This is the second simultaneous crash of two US Army helicopters this year. The first incident occurred in late March when two HH-60 Black Hawk utility helicopters collided in the air and crashed, killing nine soldiers.

A US Army Apache helicopter also crashed and flipped over during takeoff in Alaska in February, injuring two crew members.

The AH-64 Apache is the main attack helicopter of the US Army, put into service in 1986 and still in use today. About 2,400 have been produced and delivered to the US military and its allies.

The helicopter has two side wings with hardpoints that can carry 16 AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles, 70 mm Hydra unguided rocket launchers, AIM-92 Stinger low-altitude air-to-air missiles. Under the belly of the helicopter is equipped with a 30 mm M230 automatic cannon with 1,200 rounds of ammunition.
