Reuters on March 13 quoted Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem as welcoming US President Donald Trump's hint at withdrawing the proposal to relocate all Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and calling on him not to follow Israel's point of view.

The comments came after Mr Trump said "nobody expelled any Palestinians from Gaza", in response to a question during a White House meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

"If President Trump's statements are a sign of an end to the idea of relocating the people of Gaza, then we welcome it," Qassem said.

"We call for strengthening this position by forcing the Israeli occupation forces to implement all the terms of the ceasefire agreement," he added.

US holds unprecedented talks with Hamas, Trump issues ultimatum

Last month, Mr Trump proposed a US takeover of Gaza after saying Palestinians in the enclave should be permanently relocated.

On March 9, Hamas political adviser Taher Al-Nono confirmed unprecedented direct talks with the US in Qatar last week, focusing on the release of a dual US-Israeli citizen being held by the group in Gaza.

He added that meetings between Hamas leaders and US hostage negotiator Adam Boehler also discussed how to implement a phased deal to end hostilities in Gaza.

Meeting President Trump at the White House on March 12, Prime Minister Martin welcomed his "relentless" efforts to find peace in the Middle East.

The Irish leader reiterated his call for increased humanitarian aid into Gaza and support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
