Damaged goods sold in supermarkets

During my trips to write articles about food safety, I always thought that food products brought to supermarkets, in addition to ensuring clear origin, must always be fresh and of good quality. However, I had to rethink when I bought products that were not of guaranteed quality and were spoiled in the supermarket twice.

The first time I bought a carton of yogurt from H. supermarket, I opened it at home and was shocked because the milk carton had changed from white to yellow, and some corners of the carton had mold and turned black. This was milk from a famous domestic company, and the expiration date was still about 1 month. So why did the milk spoil?

When my family reported to the supermarket, the manager quickly apologized and sent someone to collect the damaged yogurt box and exchange it for a new one. Explaining the reason for the damage, the supermarket staff said that during transportation, the milk box may have been deformed due to impact, allowing air from the outside to get in, causing the milk to become moldy.

The second time, I went to a fairly large supermarket in the province to buy strawberries. Among the strawberries sold here, the imported strawberries from Korea were big and beautiful, and looked very delicious. During my trip to Korea, I had the chance to enjoy this fruit.

The price of this type of strawberry is almost twice as expensive as Moc Chau strawberries in Vietnam. When I got home, my child eagerly opened the box of strawberries. In addition to the fresh and delicious top layer, many of the strawberries underneath had turned yellow-brown and were mushy. I checked the label of the strawberry box and saw that it had full information from the importing company, and it still had about 10 days of shelf life.

I complained to the supermarket manager and received an apology and a request for a refund for the strawberry box. The supermarket manager also explained that because the imported goods were fresh and the unit did not check them regularly, this led to the above situation.

I think that when importing goods, supermarkets need to strengthen internal control of products before putting them on shelves. In addition, the provincial authorities, in addition to checking according to the plan of the Peak Month of Food Hygiene and Safety, need to increase surprise inspections of products brought into supermarkets to further enhance the responsibility of suppliers and ensure the rights of consumers.
