While Israel has yet to comment on the allegations that it was behind the shocking incident, Axios, citing three unnamed US officials, reported that Israeli intelligence agencies decided to act.
According to these officials, the reason for blowing up the pagers and other equipment used by Hezbollah was fear that the armed group could discover Israeli covert operations.
According to Axios , a former Israeli official claims that the country's special forces intended to use booby-trapped pagers they had planted within Hezbollah ranks in a surprise attack.
Two U.S. officials stated that Israel had not notified Washington in advance of the planned operation. Israeli officials knew that a major escalation could occur following the incident, while the military was on high alert regarding a potential response from Hezbollah forces.
According to the source, Israeli troops attacked the batteries of these pagers, leading to the explosion. The report added that the injured are being transported to hospitals in Lebanon's capital Beirut and Dahieh in the southern suburbs.
Meanwhile, Reuters , citing informed sources, reported that the Hezbollah Islamic movement had ordered pagers from the Taiwanese company Gold Apollo. However, Israeli intelligence agency Mossad allegedly planted a small amount of explosives in 5,000 of these pagers.
However, Gold Apollo CEO Xu Qingguang asserted on September 18th that the pagers exploding in various parts of Lebanon had nothing to do with Gold Apollo, but were manufactured and developed by a Hungarian company.
According to Mr. Xu Qingguang, about three years ago, Gold Apollo signed a cooperation agreement with a European company. Initially, this European company only participated in distributing Gold Apollo products, but later began independently developing the AR-924 pager, the type that exploded.
Both sides agreed that the pagers developed by the European distributor would be sold under the Gold Apollo logo. The Gold Apollo director emphasized: “Both the development and production of the explosive pagers are done overseas; they have nothing to do with Taiwan (China).”
In its statement, Gold Apollo asserted that it had established a "long-term partnership" with Budapest-based BAC Consulting KFT to use the trademark and model of the pager mentioned in the media as "manufactured and sold by BAC".
Hungary has not yet commented.
Responding to this latest incident, on September 18, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that the pager explosion needs to be investigated and requires international attention. Experts must provide the necessary assessment of this explosion.
