"In 1973, the leader of the most disputed region in the world was Golda Meir," reads the opening line before Helen Mirren, 78, appears as the powerful political figure, preparing to speak about the state of Israel.

The film Golda is based on a true story, revolving around Golda Meir during the "19 days of tension" surrounding the Yom Kippur War in 1973.
In the film, Helan Mirren struggles fiercely with many of her contemporaries, including Henry Kissinger (played by Liev Schreiber) - a former American politician, about her political views as well as her leadership style.
Golda Meir (1898-1978) served as Prime Minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. She was a globally powerful figure but was said to have carried guilt for those lost in the Yom Kippur War until her final days.
“Do you know how many people died?” Schreiber asks Mirren in the film.

Golda is not the first film in which Helan Mirren has played a prominent Jewish character. She played Jewish refugee Maria Altmann in the 2015 film Woman in Gold alongside Ryan Reynolds. The role earned her a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nomination for Lead Actress.
Helen Mirren won an Oscar for playing another head of state – Queen Elizabeth II in 2006’s The Queen . Last year, she faced backlash for her role as Meir. Some critics argued that a Jewish actress should have been cast as Meir, instead of Mirren, who is not Jewish.
Meanwhile, the actress admitted that she had spoken to director Guy Nattiv while filming Golda about his desire to cast her despite not being Jewish. "There are a lot of terrible injustices in my career," she said.
Camille Cottin (famous for the movie House of Gucci ) plays Lou Kaddar in Golda with Liev Schreiber, Helen Mirren, Ohad Knoller, Dominic Mafham, Emma Davies... The movie will be released on August 25 in the US.
