Understanding the term 'blacklisting' correctly.

"Phong sát" is a Sino-Vietnamese term, transliterated from the Chinese characters 封杀/封殺 (fēng shā). "Phong" (封) means to close or prohibit use; "sát" (杀) means to kill or murder. This term is applied in many different fields, not just in performing arts.

According to the dictionary, "a ban is an order to prohibit or block the existence of a person or thing in a certain area" (Modern Chinese Dictionary, sixth edition). Depending on the case, a ban can be applied permanently or temporarily.

In China, in sports, "banning" means "blocking" (for technical fouls in baseball and softball) or a temporary or lifetime ban from competition due to violations of the law (gambling, betting, match-fixing, etc.). In journalism, television, and film, banning means prohibiting participation in certain activities, prohibiting the dissemination of publications, parts of news, or broadcasts of programs, or prohibiting artists who have committed crimes from appearing on television. In some countries, television programs deemed "inappropriate" or containing politically sensitive content related to the government will also be banned.

In some professions, students with a "bad record" are also banned, for example, for plagiarism or copying other people's work. On online discussion forums, if a participant engages in bad behavior or incites public outrage, they are permanently banned (at the discretion of the moderator or website administrator). The internet has a banning tool that the Chinese call "sú zǎo zhǐn jíng" (搜索引擎). This is a search engine that prevents certain websites from appearing in search results.

In the West, "banning" can mean "not using" or "removing." For example, Lake Superior State University in Michigan (USA) released a list of words that should be banned in 2023, topped by the term GOAT (Greatest of All Time). This term is offensive for two reasons: there is no one so great that no one will surpass them in the future, and because the title is used so frequently. National Public Radio reported that they awarded the GOAT title to at least 17 people in 2022, including Pele, Lionel Messi (football), Serena Williams, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic (tennis)...

In the Chinese entertainment industry, besides the term "ban," fans also use terms like "snow hidden" (雪藏), "cold hidden" (冷藏), "winding head" (封嘴), or "locking up" (封锁)... These are similar terms, considered synonyms or slang.
