Curoang is a rare native chicken breed, mainly raised by the Van Kieu and Pa Ko ethnic groups in mountainous districts of Quang Tri province, such as Dakrong and Huong Hoa districts. This is a small-sized, short-legged native chicken breed. The chicken's body weight is small, with hens weighing about 1.2 - 1.4 kg and roosters weighing about 1.4 - 1.6 kg. Curoang chickens have outstanding advantages in quality such as firm, lean, delicious meat, and are favored by consumers. In addition, the native chicken breed has good immunity, adapts well to grazing conditions, and can be developed to become a local specialty product.
“Despite many advantages in breeds and strengths in farming conditions, chicken farming in the localities of Bac Huong Hoa region has not developed strongly, has not formed key commodity products and has not built a brand for local specific products.
For these reasons, we proposed and were approved to implement the project "Application of technical advances to build a biosafety chicken farming model at the Bac Huong Hoa Science and Technology Research and Application Station".
The project aims to build a model for conservation and development of biosafety chicken farming, create local specialty products, serve as a basis for brand building, and contribute to socio-economic development and national defense and security in localities along the border," said Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology, Project Manager Dao Ngoc Hoang.
To effectively implement the model, from June to July 2023, the project implementation team conducted a survey of local chicken farming households in the North Huong Hoa area (communes: Huong Phung, Huong Viet, Huong Son...). Evaluate the quality and select quality local chicken breeds to provide breeding stock for building a biosafety breeding model for breeding chickens and commercial chickens. Use available feed sources, supplement compound feed, protein-rich feed, mineral-rich feed, vitamin-rich feed... Raise according to biosafety methods, use microbial preparations as biological bedding.
The project surveyed and selected 2 households in the Bac Huong Hoa area (implemented in Huong Phung commune) to make a satellite model. Advised and guided households to upgrade, repair, and build barns, and provided technical support for raising safe native chickens for the 2 households implementing the model as well as other households in need. Supported and provided 50 breeds/model; provided a portion of concentrated feed and microbiological preparations for the 2 households implementing the model. During the implementation process, staff were assigned to directly monitor and supervise the project model.
As a result, after 18 months of implementation, the model produced 850 eggs with 7 incubation batches. The number of chicks after hatching was 728, of which 100 were given to 2 satellite models, 235 were raised commercially at the Bac Huong Hoa Science and Technology Research and Application Station.
Through the process of caring for and monitoring the growth and development indicators of the chicken flock in the main model at the station and 2 satellite models, it shows that the survival rate of chickens is over 90%, the hatching rate is over 80%; reflecting that the care process, barn hygiene and disease prevention are well ensured. No major epidemics were recorded. The profit is about 18 million VND.
The biosafety chicken farming model brings economic , social and environmental benefits. Although the initial profit is not high, after the project ends, it brings certain economic impacts. Farmers can provide breeds for neighboring areas.
Creating a high-quality Curoang chicken breed contributes to sustainable livestock development in rural areas, creating jobs and increasing income for farmers. Building a process for raising commercial chickens and safe biological reproduction contributes to improving the quality of Curoang chicken breeds of Van Kieu and Pa Ko people.
Mr. Dao Ngoc Hoang added: “From the benefits and effectiveness of the biosafety chicken farming model, the project implementation team proposes that in the coming time, the project management agency will continue to coordinate with the locality and households to implement the transfer of techniques associated with training and coaching for local people.
All levels and sectors should pay attention to promoting and introducing products, searching for and expanding consumption markets, linking with businesses consuming products; creating conditions for product consumption for producers, thereby promoting sustainable agricultural production. In particular, the province needs to have support policies and create conditions to build the Curoang chicken brand for the Bac Huong Hoa area.
