Awards for pioneers
As reported by Thanh Nien Newspaper , last night, December 20th, at the Ho Guom Theater ( Hanoi ), President Vo Van Thuong solemnly presented the VinFuture 2023 main award to four outstanding scientists who have dedicated their scientific careers to the creation of "green energy": Professor Martin Andrew Green, Professor Stanley Whittingham, Professor Rachid Yazami, and Professor Akira Yoshino.
In addition to the main award, VinFuture 2023 also awarded three special prizes, each worth $500,000, to scientists researching emerging fields, female scientists, and scientists from developing countries.
The special award for scientists from developed countries was given to Professor Gurdev Singh Khush, an Indian-American; and Professor Vo Tong Xuan, a Vietnamese.
The VinFuture 2023 Special Prize for scientists researching emerging fields was awarded to Professor Daniel Joshua Drucker (Canada), Professor Joel Francis Habener (USA), Professor Jens Juul Holst (Denmark), and Associate Professor Svetlana Mojsov (USA) for their pioneering work discovering the role of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), which forms the basis for effective treatments for diabetes and obesity and promotes new therapies for neurodegenerative diseases. This work lays the foundation and opens up new hope for treating over 400 million people with type 2 diabetes, over 1 billion people with obesity, and over 3 million people with short bowel syndrome.
The VinFuture 2023 Special Award for Female Scientists honors Professor Susan Solomon (USA) for her significant contribution to "Discovering the Mechanisms Causing Ozone Depletion in Antarctica," which helped advance the Montreal Protocol—a crucial effort to reduce large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions globally.
VinFuture 2024 season officially kicks off.
The VinFuture Awards are a central activity of the VinFuture Foundation, a non-profit organization co-founded by billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong and his wife, Pham Thu Huong. The awards aim to recognize outstanding inventors and researchers from universities, research institutes, laboratories, and technology corporations worldwide, honoring groundbreaking scientific research and technological innovation that creates meaningful change in the daily lives of millions of people.
The four winning projects were outstanding, surpassing nearly 1,400 impressive nominations from 90 countries and territories worldwide. These are all groundbreaking initiatives with far-reaching impacts on the present and future of humanity, belonging to important fields that are increasingly affecting the lives of billions of people globally, including green and sustainable energy, climate change response, sustainable agriculture and food security, and health and medicine.
According to the VinFuture Foundation, immediately after the conclusion of the VinFuture 2023 awards ceremony, the 4th cycle of the VinFuture Awards has begun. The official call for nominations for the VinFuture Awards will run from 2 PM on January 9, 2024 to 2 PM on April 17, 2024, Hanoi time (GMT+7).
The award will honor advances in science and technology that align with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as eradicating poverty, ending hunger, improving health and quality of life, creating opportunities for learning in progressive education, clean water, renewable energy, reducing inequality, and addressing climate change.
