WIPO Director General Daren Tang.
To successfully implement Resolution 57 on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, WIPO is actively cooperating with Vietnamese authorities such as the Ministry of Science and Technology to deploy a new intellectual property strategy, implementing the vision that "Vietnam will not only import technology, not only absorb technology but also export technology".
In this journey, WIPO saw the need to focus on supporting young people because they “recognize the need to innovate but often lack the necessary skills”. One of the measures WIPO is applying in Vietnam is implementing the Youth Empowerment Strategy IP-YES! 2024, which emphasizes the role of intellectual property education for the young generation to promote sustainable innovation.
This strategy consists of three core parts:
Changing Mindset: The most important thing is to change mindset, especially among young people. We need to stop believing that innovation only happens in advanced economies, in a developed country, or in some remote location. Instead, young Vietnamese people need to believe that innovation can happen right at home, in their village, community, commune, district, or city. The emergence of many Vietnamese startups today has proven this.
Building a culture of innovation should start as early as possible and knowledge about IP should be introduced to children from primary and secondary school.
Providing knowledge and tools: The second part of the strategy is to help provide knowledge and tools to young people interested in innovation. The organization has trained 620,000 people in the past 5 years, 60% of whom are young people (under 35). This training is the foundation for the future.
Applying knowledge and commercialization: CEO Daren Tang used the case of Ms. Tran Thi Huong Giang, founder and Deputy General Director of GenaTech Pharmaceutical Joint Stock Company, to demonstrate that true innovation is about bringing ideas to market, not just creating in a research institute. Accordingly, Ms. Giang successfully researched a probiotic to support digestion, however, she did not know how to protect her technology product. With support for about four to six months, WIPO guided her to create an intellectual property strategy, helping her to patent and create a trademark to commercialize the product. Currently, the company has achieved many successes in the market.
“The next stage after training is to help young people apply their knowledge and integrate intellectual property knowledge into business strategies to achieve success,” said Mr. Daren Tang.
Citing the success of singer Duc Phuc at the Intervision 2025 stage, General Director Daren Tang said that modern innovation is not only limited to the technology field but also in the cultural field. The young generation is capable of combining cultural creativity with technology to create success.
According to Mr. Daren Tang, Vietnam’s future will increasingly depend on intellectual resources, innovation, science, technology and creativity, beyond natural resources and agriculture. In this journey, WIPO is committed to continuing to support Vietnam to bring opportunities to all young people with good ideas, using intellectual property to succeed.
