From August 28th to September 1st, the Saigon International Guitar Festival 2024 (SIGF 2024) will open at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music. The festival will become an artistic meeting point for audiences in the city and world-class guitarists.
With SIGF 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music creates a diverse and enriching environment for exchange and learning, helping students develop comprehensively and access opportunities for professional artistic exchange with other countries, thereby experiencing and learning knowledge from different artistic cultures. The competition helps raise awareness, update knowledge, and refine and adjust teaching and learning methods in the specialized field.
The festival features six concerts, a classical guitar competition open to participants from across Asia, with four solo categories and one ensemble category (two or more guitars). In addition, there are workshops and masterclasses with world- class guitarists.
SIGF 2024 opened with a concert titled "Ouverture De Festival" on the evening of August 28th. The program began with orchestral pieces from world-renowned artists such as "Les 4 Points Cardinaux" by French composer Francis Kleynjans and "Kalimba & Techno" by Swiss artist Kindle Jürg.
The audience will have the opportunity to enjoy a duet of mandolin and guitar through a performance by the Japanese duo Risa Shimono and Kozo Tate. In addition, there will be a reunion of the Saigon Guitar Quartet, consisting of artists Nguyen Thanh Huy, Nguyen Tri Doan, Huynh Ba Tho, and Tran Hoai Phuong.
The concert on the second day (August 29th), themed " Young Virtuoso ," brought together young virtuosos such as Kasia Smolarek (Poland); Pongpat Pongradit, Gen Nutthachai Chaivanich (Thailand).
The third night (August 30th) of The Legends is a journey back in time with timeless melodies "at the helm" of two artists, An Tran (Vietnam and the US) and Benjamin Verdery (Spain). Audiences will have the opportunity to listen to distinctly Vietnamese melodies such as "Thanh Giong" by Nguyen The An and "Ru Con " by Dang Ngoc Long, performed by An Tran, as well as vibrant contemporary pieces by composer Benjamin Verdery.
The fourth concert night, themed "The Magnificence of Baroque," (August 31st) will feature performances by the renowned violinist Admir Doci (Albania/Switzerland) and the veteran artist Gerard Abiton (France).
The guitar competition within the framework of SIGF 2024 includes 5 categories: Open, Under 18, Ensemble, Amateur, and Amateur Under 13.
On August 29th, 30th, 31st, and September 1st, masterclasses featuring renowned guest artists such as Benjamin Verdery (USA), Admir Doçi (Albania/Switzerland), Gérard Abiton (France), Keun Cheng (Malaysia), and Giovanni Grano (Italy) will take place. Particularly on September 1st, the famous artist Gen Matsuda from Japan will lead a masterclass specifically for guitar ensembles.
In addition, the public will also have the opportunity to interact with guitar makers from Vietnam and abroad such as Gerard Abiton (France), Benjamin Verdery (USA), Giovanni Grano (Italy), Risa Shimono (Japan), An Tran (Vietnam/USA)... A special highlight of SIGF 2024 is that the audience will have the chance to admire and enjoy the unique sound of the 13-string guitar by artist Admir Doci.
