The Formula 4 South East Asia Championship (F4 Southeast Asia - F4 SEA) has just concluded the qualifying round for the final round (taking place today and tomorrow, September 21) in Malaysia, Hoang Dat Sawer (Alex Sawer) has also officially become the champion of the F4 SEA racing tournament.
The 17-year-old racer became the first Vietnamese racer to win the overall individual championship of a Formula racing tournament under the International Automobile Federation (FIA).
In 11 laps of the first 4 stages, Hoang Dat finished first 9 times (1 lap was not completed due to an incident, 1 time finished 4th), thereby accumulating 297 points, 94 points more than the next ranked opponent Seth Gilmore (Australia, same Evans GP team).
On the morning of September 20, Italian racer Niccolò Maccagnani won 2 pole positions in qualifying, so the racer in 2nd place Gilmore could not accumulate 4 more pole points. This made the gap between Hoang Dat and the Australian racer still maintained at 94 points.
Vietnamese racer, Hoang Dat Sawer won F4 SEA championship 3 rounds early
In the final stage, the total maximum remaining points in the 3 rounds of Round 5 was only 90 (30 points for each win), which meant Hoang Dat was officially crowned champion without having to care about the results of the remaining 3 rounds of Stage 5.
"Because there are 3 more races left, please allow me to wait to celebrate, focus on racing for the rest of the season" - Dat expressed on his personal page in response to the congratulations of fans of this speed sport .
Dat, who competes for the Evans GP team (Australia), had his first race at F4 SEA 2025 in Sepang (Malaysia), which took place in May. He immediately made an impression by winning all three races in this race, creating an almost absolute advantage right from the first half of the season.

Hoang Dat has a British father and a Vietnamese mother and received full support when entering this speed sport path.
Dat expressed his feelings when winning the championship 3 rounds early: “This is a really special memory for me. I am very happy that my efforts throughout the season have been recognized with the championship, but I understand that I am just at the beginning of my journey. This achievement is thanks to the support from my family, team and those who have always accompanied me.
I hope this result will add a little joy to Vietnamese sports. In the coming time, I will look for more opportunities to compete in many other races. My goal in 2026 is to step up to the F3 racing class, continue to learn and strive to go further on the road ahead."
The F4 SEA Championship takes place from May to September 2025, the first Southeast Asian regional tournament, attracting 15 racers from 5 teams. The racing teams compete in 5 stages, with 14 laps.
F4 is a motorsport category for young drivers, serving as an important stepping stone after leaving kart racing to move to single-seater cars. F4 races are organized according to FIA technical standards worldwide, with many national and regional championships in the UK, Spain, Central and Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia.
