Learn, understand and foster love for the nation's cultural heritage

“Building and developing an advanced Vietnamese culture imbued with national identity” is the latest book on culture by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, jointly launched by the Central Propaganda Department, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, and the National Political Publishing House Truth on June 21, 2024.

The book is 927 pages thick, a selection of 92 articles, speeches, talks, notes, interviews, letters... by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on building and developing Vietnamese culture, in which the earliest article is from 1968.

And one of the speeches that left the deepest impression on all people, especially those who are working and interested in the cultural field, was the speech of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the 2021 National Cultural Conference.

At this Conference, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong made very profound, passionate, and declarative statements, requests, and instructions on the cultural field such as: "As long as culture exists, the nation exists"!

In particular, the General Secretary requested to overcome the " economic- only" mindset, focusing only on the economy and paying little attention to culture. It is necessary to seriously grasp the viewpoint that "culture must be placed on par with economics, politics, and society".

Or "soon overcome the patchwork and arbitrary situation in arranging cultural staff, both at the central and local levels"...

However, there are small local advices that do not appear in the book, but have great lesson value and serve as a guideline for those working in culture - such as the advice of the General Secretary during his visit to the Hue Monuments Complex in 2014, which was recently recounted by Dr. Phan Thanh Hai, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thua Thien Hue Province, former Director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center at that time.

“It is a treasure trove of cultural and artistic knowledge typical and extremely valuable of the ancients, but we need to learn and understand it to be able to promote it well” - General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong advised those working in heritage management after being introduced to some typical poems on Hue royal architecture.

It is noteworthy that after instructing the team of people working in preserving the cultural heritage of the ancient capital of Hue to constantly study and strive to improve their knowledge, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong also repeatedly emphasized a very good and new idea, whose importance has not been properly appreciated by many people: "We must always foster love for the priceless heritages of the nation".

Because in reality, learning to understand heritage is easy and many people can do it, but to have love and passion for heritage is very difficult and not everyone can do it.

And by extension, not only with the cultural heritage left by our ancestors, but with any area of life, including love between people, must always be nurtured!
