At the meeting on giving opinions on building educational activities in schools, representatives of public and non-public schools gave opinions on the time frame for the 2025-2026 school year.
According to this framework, Ho Chi Minh City has not yet regulated the time for Tet holiday 2026. Schools propose that the Department of Education and Training regulate early so that schools can proactively arrange study plans for students right from the beginning of the school year.
Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training, said that the timetable for the 2025-2026 school year in Ho Chi Minh City is implemented according to regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
Specifically, the school year begins on September 5 and ends on May 31, ensuring 35 weeks of actual teaching. During this time, schools can proactively arrange teaching and learning plans to ensure enough weeks of actual learning. The Lunar New Year holiday schedule will be arranged appropriately, as long as the required number of teaching weeks is ensured.
Regarding the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday, the Department will propose a schedule for the entire week, meaning a weekend break and a return to school at the beginning of the week. It is expected that the Department of Education and Training will propose to the City People's Committee to allow students to have a 2-week Lunar New Year holiday.

Thus, if counting weekends, students in Ho Chi Minh City can have 16 days off for Lunar New Year 2026.
According to the 2025-2026 school year schedule issued by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the school year begins on September 5, 2025 with the first semester lasting 18 weeks of actual study, and the second semester from January 19, 2026 with 17 weeks of actual study. All levels of education will end the school year before May 31, 2026, then proceed to consider graduation and complete enrollment for the next school year.
According to the decision of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the holidays and Tet holidays of the city's students are regulated by the Labor Code and guiding documents during the year; if the holiday falls on a weekend, the next working day will be compensated. School principals proactively develop appropriate educational plans for their units in accordance with regulations.
Teachers' leave is taken during the summer vacation or can be arranged alternately at other times of the year to suit the specific characteristics and schedule of the school year.
