The K54 gun is currently widely equipped in the Army, the gun uses conventional bullets (lead core and steel core) to fight against physical targets. With the development of current personal protection equipment, these bullets no longer meet combat requirements due to low penetration ability, cannot hit physical targets wearing armor (from level 2 according to Russian standards and level IIIA according to American standards) or physical targets hidden in non-armored technical vehicles.

With the aim of increasing the penetration power and improving the combat effectiveness of bullets, scientists at the Faculty of Weapons, Military Technical Academy have researched, designed and successfully manufactured the 7.62x25mm K51XG armor-piercing bullet. The product belongs to a Ministry of National Defense -level scientific research project led by Colonel, Dr. Do Van Minh, Head of the Department of Ammunition, Faculty of Weapons.

To increase the bullet's penetration power and ensure that it can be fired on existing guns, scientists have researched and combined many design solutions such as: Using an unsealed bullet structure, using stress concentration grooves on the shell, increasing the propellant energy, and reducing the mass of the bullet. These solutions allow to increase the average velocity of the bullet (increasing from 430m/s to 520m/s), increase the specific energy upon impact, reduce energy loss during penetration and especially do not increase the maximum gas pressure of the propellant, thereby allowing it to be used on the K54 gun in the equipment.

The highlight of the K51XG bullet is its high penetrating power. Test results show that the bullet can penetrate 5mm thick homogeneous CT3 steel placed perpendicular to the gun barrel axis at a distance of 25m with a 100% rate; it can penetrate previous K51 bulletproof vests. The design plan, materials used as well as technological solutions for manufacturing the product are suitable for the existing domestic production line.

The 7.62x25mm armor-piercing bullet is currently being further perfected and manufactured to soon be added to the K54 gun's ammunition set, a type of bullet with great penetrating power, improving the combat effectiveness of soldiers on the battlefield.
