The doctoral degree awarding ceremony took place within the framework of the opening ceremony of the new school year 2025 - 2026 of the Vietnam Buddhist Academy.
The event was attended by dignitaries of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, along with representatives of relevant agencies and sectors such as: Government Committee for Religious Affairs, Ministry of Religions and Ethnicities, Vietnam Fatherland Front , a number of researchers, and a large number of Buddhists.
The first Buddhist doctors
At the ceremony, Professor Luong Gia Tinh - Deputy Director of the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi - said that since 2018, the academy has been allowed to train doctoral students.
To date, only two people have successfully defended their doctoral theses, both with distinction.
In general, in the Vietnamese Buddhist education system, so far only three people have been awarded a doctorate in Buddhist studies. In addition to the two people who received degrees from the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi as mentioned above, there is one person who received a doctorate in Buddhist studies at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City in December 2023.
Regarding doctoral training at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi, Professor Luong Gia Tinh said that so far there have been 57 doctoral students.
Notably, there are many intellectuals who are Buddhist lay people with master's or doctoral degrees in other sciences, registering for the Buddhist doctoral program (18/57 PhD students are lay people).
Regarding the general training results in the past school year of the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi, Professor Luong Gia Tinh said that in addition to the doctorate of Venerable Thich Minh Nghia, there was also a student who completed his master's thesis, and 46 monks and nuns graduated from the Buddhist college system.
Seven students with excellent achievements received certificates of merit from the rector of the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi.
There are currently 855 monks, nuns and students studying at 3 levels, with 4 educational systems at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi: college, bachelor's and postgraduate (with master's and doctoral students).

Buddhist Academy encourages monks and nuns to practice sports
Regarding facilities, the academy has a Vien Quang complex with nearly 3,000 square meters of construction, including lecture halls, meditation halls, ceremonial meeting rooms and a library - media - translation information center.
The Academy is designing and building a multi-purpose library area of 8,000m2 following the model of a modern library information center, which is also a place to serve the needs of intellectual and physical training with rooms for table tennis, chess, Chinese chess, etc.
Outdoor sports, the academy has soccer, volleyball, and badminton fields.
Within the framework of the opening ceremony, the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Hanoi also announced the decision to appoint Venerable Thich Thanh Thuc (born in 1995) as Deputy Head of the Academy's Training Department.
The Academy also donated over 1,000 books to the Phat Quang Bookcase for 5 schools in Ninh Binh and Quang Ninh; and gave a computer scholarship to a new student of the computer science faculty of the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology in Hanoi.
