More than 100,000 VND per kilogram of early ripe lychee

Compared to last year, the price of litchi in the Central Highlands provinces increased by 30% to 90,000-110,000 VND per kilogram.

This week, many supermarkets, stores and websites have started selling early-ripening lychees at high prices ranging from 89,000 to over 110,000 VND per kilogram. This is a 30% increase compared to last year.

Ms. Phuong Linh, a fruit seller on Thong Nhat Street (Go Vap), said she has been selling lychees for over a week now but has sold out every time they come in despite the high prices. "Compared to last year, the amount of goods coming in is less, so each time there are only about 20-30kg of grade 1 goods," Ms. Linh said.

According to Ms. Linh, the U Hong lychee has the advantage of being plump and pink in color, and the first-grade lychees are as big as a chicken egg. These lychees are mainly imported from Dak Lak province, and have a sweet taste with a little sourness, not as sweet as the ones from the North.

Selling hundreds of kilograms every week, Ms. Minh Anh, a fruit shop owner in District 1, said that this year's lychee quantity is limited due to a poor harvest. In particular, grade 1 products are even rarer because the output has decreased by 40-50% compared to last year. Therefore, the price at the beginning of the season this year has increased sharply. "In the first days of April, I sold 130,000 VND per kilogram, but now it has cooled down to 89,000 VND because of the higher output," Ms. Anh said.

Staff at the MM Mega supermarket chain in Thu Duc City said that lychees are soon sold in the Dak Lak province specialty section. Lychees are selected from gardens that grow according to VietGAP standards. Since the beginning of the season, lychees have been one of the best-selling products in the chain.

MM Mega Market representative said that there is a promotion program of 109,000 VND to 89,000 VND per kg. The supermarket expects to sell several dozen tons of goods to farmers across the system by the end of the season.

According to sales establishments, the reason for the increase in the price of pink lychee this year is that output has decreased compared to the same period while demand has increased.

Khanh Duong, a gardener in Dak Lak, said his family has 20 lychee trees, but half of them only bear a few fruits, while the remaining trees bear about 100 kg each, down 40% from last year. "This year, care costs have increased, while yields have decreased, so gardeners can only afford care costs," Khanh Duong said.

Losing 60% of the output compared to last year, Lam Anh gardeners also said that this year they only break even. Currently, the price of U Hong lychee at the garden is 40,000-50,000 VND per kg.

According to the Dak Lak Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, this year, lychee ripened early, resulting in lower output due to weather effects. To support growers, the department has also connected with modern retail systems to farmers for stable output.

According to statistics, the whole province currently has about 2,570 hectares of lychee growing area, of which the area for products is 1,358 hectares, with an output of about 10,000 tons. Currently, the whole province has 9 lychee growing areas with codes for export to China.
