Starting a business with 1000 chickens

In recent years, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong has been one of the typical farmers of Hai Xuan commune, Ninh Binh province (Hai Xuan commune, Hai Hau district, old Nam Dinh province). Mr. Cong's journey to become a billionaire farmer has become a great inspiration for millions of farmers across the country, not only because of his economic achievements but also because of his spirit of daring to think and daring to do to escape poverty.

According to the reporter's investigation, in 2006, after many struggles, trials and failures with all kinds of jobs, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong "fell in love" with the profession of raising egg-laying chickens. "Before starting to raise chickens, I myself worked as a delivery man for agents. Realizing the potential of this product, I gradually learned the experience of raising egg-laying chickens and started a business with about more than 1,000 chickens" - Mr. Nguyen Van Cong confided.

Thanks to his diligence in learning techniques and accumulating practical experience, after more than 2 years, Mr. Cong's flock of laying hens has reached about 5,000. However, the large number of hens puts pressure on the output of chicken eggs. On average, the chicken farm produces about 4,000 eggs per day, so traders cannot sell them all, eggs are left in stock and the family faces the risk of bankruptcy due to unsold goods.

“There was a time when I carried nearly 1,000 eggs every day on my old motorbike to offer everywhere but no one bought them. Agricultural businesses consumed a small amount of eggs, while confectionery companies did not import them due to the lack of standards required for confectionery production. It was during that extremely difficult time that I realized that I needed to upgrade the production process to ensure the products met quality standards and strive to become a supplier of raw materials for confectionery companies,” Mr. Cong shared.

Thinking is doing, Mr. Cong immediately started to learn and research the strict requirements of confectionery production facilities to invest in building a chicken farm using modern and safe technology. At that time, there was no family in the locality that raised large-scale livestock, especially applying technology to production, so when he started working, even his family members were worried.

In 2008, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong borrowed money from everywhere to invest in an industrial-standard barn system, increasing the total number of laying hens to about 10,000. Although the barn was built according to technical standards, Mr. Cong changed it to suit the local climate and soil conditions. Each barn must be designed to be moderate, 1.7 - 1.9 m high, 12 m wide, 60 m long, with a cooling system and ventilation fans to help regulate the temperature to always be stable at about 25 degrees Celsius.

The automatic water trough system and food trays are arranged reasonably with each compartment, creating a comfortable space for the chickens to grow and lay eggs. Thanks to the investment in the system of food troughs, drinking water, automatic temperature control and balance, and waste treatment with biological bedding. Thanks to the strict and scientific farming process, the chickens grow well, have few diseases, and meet the food safety and hygiene indicators as well as the nutritional content of eggs, yolk ratio...

Sharing with reporters, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong said: "Currently, my total herd is about 70,000 chickens with stable output. Thanks to the breeding process meeting VietGAP standards, the chicken egg products achieving 4-star and 3-star OCOP, my family's products have been signed contracts by confectionery companies and supermarket chains to consume large quantities of the Cong Phuong chicken egg brand."

Never give up the entrepreneurial spirit

Although he has been involved in the egg-laying business for 20 years, Mr. Nguyen Van Cong has never lost his entrepreneurial spirit. He always researches, learns, and applies the most advanced breeding techniques to production to increase product value.

Since around 2015, Mr. Cong has proactively researched and asked the authorities for guidance to implement good agricultural production in Vietnam (VietGAP). In 2016, his family's chicken farm was granted a Certificate of clean egg production according to VietGAP standards by the authorities, so the brand value is increasingly guaranteed.

At the same time, Mr. Cong immediately started to build chicken egg products that meet OCOP standards. Currently, his family farm has 2 products that have achieved OCOP certification: local chicken eggs (3-star OCOP) and red chicken eggs (4-star OCOP). Although he is a true farmer, thanks to his acumen and strong entrepreneurial spirit, Mr. Cong has quickly caught up with the times, creating the "key" to solving the problem of competition and integration.

According to Mr. Cong, one of the biggest difficulties when pursuing the career of raising laying hens is the spirit of daring to take risks and being willing to accept risks. “The scariest thing about this profession is not necessarily the breeding techniques or investment capital, but the consumption market and prices. Suppose the selling price to make a profit on an egg is 1,900 VND, but when the market price drops to 1,700 VND, I lose 200 VND/egg. For a farm of about 60,000 laying hens like mine, losing more than ten million VND a day is completely normal. But if the market is favorable, earning billions of VND per year is also within reach.”

Despite facing many risks, Mr. Cong said he still accepted to face them when sharing: “Starting a business requires acceptance. But I believe that the market has its ups and downs, but the value of the products I build and create will spread more and more. I started from scratch, experienced many ups and downs, but still managed to stand in the profession, all thanks to keeping up with agricultural trends and focusing on product quality.”

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Minh Giang, Vice Chairman of Hai Xuan Commune People's Committee, affirmed: "Mr. Nguyen Van Cong's egg-laying chicken farm is a typical economic model of the locality. For many years, this model has contributed to proving the ability of farmers to be proactive and creative in converting from small-scale farming to large-scale, modern farms. I think if farmers have passion and are supported with technology and investment capital, these examples will have a strong spreading power."
