(CLO) Power outages in more than 200,000 households in Bosnia and Herzegovina continued for a second day after a heavy snowstorm swept through the Balkan region, causing serious chaos.

According to information from two electricity supply companies in Bosnia, towns and villages in the northwestern and central regions of Bosnia were most severely affected.

Although the snow stopped falling on December 25, coinciding with the Catholic community's Christmas celebrations, many roads remained blocked, making access to isolated areas difficult.

"Our rescue teams are working tirelessly at the scene, but most of the damaged power lines are located in hard-to-reach areas," said Jelena Markovic, a spokeswoman for electricity distribution company Elektroprenos BiH.

In Croatia, rescuers rescued 48 people trapped in snow in the Lika region, central part of the country.

In Slovenia, high winds and heavy snow have prevented rescue helicopters from reaching a Hungarian hiker stranded in the Alps since December 22.

In Serbia, about 10,000 households in the western region lost power on December 25, according to Ivan Spajic, head of the emergency response department in the town of Sabac. However, most of the problems were resolved by the end of the day.

The snowstorm has severely disrupted the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in the Balkans, especially during the Christmas holidays. Authorities continue to work to overcome the consequences, but the harsh weather conditions and difficult terrain have slowed the restoration of electricity and transport routes.

Power outages and difficulties caused by snowstorms have highlighted the challenges Balkan countries face in improving infrastructure and responding to natural disasters.
