The 2025 message launched by UN-Water has the theme “Sanitation in a Changing World” with the slogan “We'll Always Need the Toilet”, emphasizing that no matter how the world changes, the need for safe, clean toilets will always be a basic and sustainable human need.
In Vietnam, school sanitation conditions still pose many challenges. Statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training in 2021 show that the country has about 188,000 school toilets, of which 67% are solid structures, while 33% need to be upgraded or rebuilt. In some difficult areas, sanitation facilities have not been properly invested in, and many students are afraid to use them due to lack of safety or hygiene, affecting children's health and psychology.
Faced with that situation, from 2021, the Vietnam Stature Fund (VSF), TH Group and Bac A Commercial Joint Stock Bank ( BAC A BANK ) coordinated with the National Volunteer Center, the Ministry of Education and Training and partners to implement the project "1,000 school toilets" with a total budget of 61.5 billion VND.
The project aims to build and renovate at least 1,000 school toilets and raise awareness of toilet maintenance, use, and personal hygiene practices for students in disadvantaged localities within 10 years.
In 2025 alone, the project started construction of 102 toilets in 11 provinces including: Son La, Phu Tho, Nghe An, Dien Bien, Lai Chau, Gia Lai, Quang Ngai, Dak Lak, Tay Ninh, Lam Dong, Ca Mau. Of which, 39 works were completed and put into use. In the same year, the project implementing units also signed with the Department of Education and Training of Nghe An province to donate 300 toilets, with a total value of 1.8 billion VND.

In addition to building and upgrading toilets, the project also installed hand washing instruction boards according to Ministry of Health standards; provided hand washing water; organized training on personal hygiene, clean water use, adolescent reproductive health and school health; and conducted communication activities and hygiene festivals at schools.
This is also a pioneering project, creating a wave of action for many stakeholders across the country to participate in order to achieve the goals of the School Health Program and other national target programs.
Clean and safe toilets play an important role in preventing infectious diseases, limiting environmental pollution and ensuring students’ privacy. This is also one of the conditions for implementing Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation.
On the occasion of World Toilet Day on November 19, these activities once again emphasize the role of school hygiene in protecting children's health, and call for the community's cooperation so that all students can study in a clean and safe environment, creating conditions for children to develop comprehensively both physically and mentally.
