Mr. Tran Minh Khoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City, Kien Giang province, said that the locality has just submitted a report to the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee on the current situation and proposed a plan for merging commune-level administrative units of the city.
Phu Quoc currently has 7 communes and 2 wards. The People's Committee of Phu Quoc City has proposed merging the communes and wards according to two options.

Option 1, proposed by the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City, involves reorganizing the existing 9 communes/wards into 2 grassroots-level administrative units.
Specifically, the plan involves reorganizing eight communes on the main island of Phu Quoc into a single administrative unit at the grassroots level, with a total area of over 575 km2 and a population of over 159,800 people, under the new name of Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone.
The temporary headquarters is planned to be located at No. 4, 30th April Street, Duong Dong Ward (existing). In the long term, the new administrative center will be located at the eastern end of the old airport (behind the statue of President Ho Chi Minh in Ho Chi Minh Square).
The island commune of Thổ Châu, with an area of nearly 14 km2 and a population of over 1,800 people, will remain unchanged and be renamed the Thổ Châu Special Zone.
Option 2, proposed by the People's Committee of Phu Quoc City, involves organizing the 8 communes/wards on the main island into 2 grassroots-level administrative units, while retaining the Tho Chau island commune as is.
Specifically, the northern area of Phu Quoc Island (including the communes of Ganh Dau, Cua Can, Bai Thom, Cua Duong, Duong Dong, and parts of Duong To and Ham Ninh communes), with a total area of over 450 km2 and a population of over 81,600 people, has been renamed the North Phu Quoc Special Zone.
The temporary headquarters is planned to be located at the (former) headquarters at No. 4, 30th April Street, Duong Dong Ward (existing). In the long term, the new administrative center will be located at the eastern end of the old airport.
The southern area of Phu Quoc Island (including An Thoi ward, parts of Duong To and Ham Ninh communes), with a total area of 125 km2 and a population of over 69,500 people, has been renamed the Southern Phu Quoc Special Zone.
The Tho Chau island commune remains unchanged as in Plan 1.
