Mr. Tran Nhan Nghia - Deputy Head of the Ho Chi Minh City Irrigation Department - talks about measures to respond to storm Kalmaegi
On the afternoon of November 6, at the Ho Chi Minh City economic and social press conference, a representative of the Department of Agriculture and Environment informed about the response plan for storm Kalmaegi (storm number 13).
Accordingly, the water level at An Phu station (Saigon River) measured 1.78m (on November 6), which will exceed the previous historical level recorded in 2019 (1.77m). According to this department, riverside areas, canals, and low-lying areas are at risk of severe flooding if heavy rain occurs at the same time as high tide.
Faced with this development, although not part of the local group planning to respond to storm Kalmaegi in the Prime Minister's directive, the Department of Agriculture and Environment still advised the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to direct departments, branches and localities to deploy plans to prevent and combat flooding, ensuring safety for people, especially in riverside and canal areas.
The City Command, City Police and related units have been requested by the city to prepare human resources and means for rescue in case of emergency.
In addition, the city has also reviewed and guided ships operating at sea, especially in the old Ba Ria - Vung Tau area, to ensure safety.
At the press conference, Ms. Mac Thi Nga - Head of the Department of Fisheries of Ho Chi Minh City - said that up to now, the whole city has more than 4,500 boats, of which 992 are operating at sea. There are 3 boats in the area affected by the storm, the authorities and local authorities have notified the boat owners and captains.
By this morning, 2 ships had entered Lam Dong waters for shelter, 1 ship was at Tien Nu island to ensure safety.
Currently, 4 fishing control ships of Ho Chi Minh City are still on duty at 4 seaports, ready to support fishing boats of the city or other provinces when necessary.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, units continue to closely monitor storm developments and high tide levels, coordinate with the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Ho Chi Minh City... to deploy response measures when unusual situations occur.
