Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, Ministry of Industry and Trade , said that by 2024, the scale of the retail e-commerce market in Vietnam will reach over 25 billion USD, an increase of more than 20% over the previous year.

This message was emphasized at the "Conference on E-commerce - Diversifying export markets and Applying digital technology for businesses", held on September 5 in Ho Chi Minh City. The conference is part of the Vietnam International Sourcing 2025 Event Series, chaired by the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy (Ministry of Industry and Trade).

Chairing the Conference, Ms. Lai Viet Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy, Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that in 2024, the scale of the retail e-commerce market in Vietnam will reach over 25 billion USD, an increase of more than 20% compared to the previous year and accounting for about 9% of the total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue nationwide. E-commerce is not only a growth driver but also a solid foundation for the breakthrough of the national digital economy.

Ms. Lai Viet Anh also believes that digital technology is an important lever for the development of e-commerce. The application of technologies such as AI, Big Data and IoT will help businesses optimize operations, reduce costs, analyze market trends accurately and build smart access strategies, thereby improving product quality to meet the strict requirements of the international market.

Sharing this perspective, Mr. Nick Chai, Chairman of ACBC Malaysia, said that Vietnam has many advantages to become a regional cross-border e-commerce hub thanks to its strategic geographical location, abundant supply of goods, young population and strong support policies from the Government. This is considered a "leverage" to help Vietnamese businesses break through and increase international competitiveness.

Mr. Nick Chai, Chairman of ACBC Malaysia, commented that Vietnam has many advantages to become a cross-border e-commerce center of the region.

Diversify the market and enhance the brand

Sharing from an international perspective, Mr. Xiao Qiuli, General Director of Guangdong Global Shopping E-commerce Co., Ltd. (GGBingo), said that Vietnam is facing a great opportunity to accelerate exports thanks to the multi-channel e-commerce model. Mr. Xiao Qiuli cited the experience of China, a country that achieved 2.71 trillion yuan in cross-border e-commerce turnover in 2024 thanks to the development of logistics, bonded warehouses and modern technology platforms. According to him, Vietnamese enterprises can take advantage of this model to quickly improve their global competitiveness.

Mr. Xiao Qiuli emphasized that market diversification is a key factor, not only focusing on the United States or China but also expanding to ASEAN, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. At the same time, shifting from OEM (original equipment manufacturer model) to D2C (direct to consumer) to build the "Made in Vietnam" brand, combined with effectively exploiting channels such as Amazon, TikTok Shop, Lazada, Shopee, JD.com... will help increase coverage and optimize sales. In particular, investing in international logistics and training cross-border e-commerce human resources will be the foundation for Vietnamese goods to reach further and participate more deeply in the global supply chain.

Ms. Vu Xuan Linh, Director of Strategic Partnerships (Vietnam), Sea Group, Singapore, affirmed that the ASEAN market is the "digital frontier" for small businesses, cooperatives and business households participating in cross-border e-commerce. ASEAN is currently Vietnam's fourth largest export market with a turnover of 32 billion USD in 2023, and is forecast to have an e-commerce scale of 330 billion USD by 2025. This is not only a dynamic region with increasing purchasing power, but also a proven destination for Vietnamese goods, especially in key markets such as Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Technology application: The key to breakthrough

In addition, the Conference spent a lot of time sharing about the role of digital technology. Mr. Phi Anh Tuan, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Information Technology Association, emphasized that technology is a key lever to improve the competitiveness of enterprises in the digital age. In the context of rapid technology development and increasingly fierce competition, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), digital transformation is considered the "key to survival". According to Mr. Tuan, enterprises are facing many challenges such as inefficient operations, high costs, pressure to change digital technology and increasing requirements for "clean-green" standards. Enterprises need a comprehensive approach revolving around three pillars: People, Data - Process, Technology and at the same time improving IT capacity.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Hien, General Director of Next Robotics, who has experience working with many large manufacturing corporations in the world, shared AI solutions applied to modern management models and automatic robots in production monitoring, real-time product quality inspection, helping businesses improve productivity and meet strict international standards. Specifically, Mr. Hien introduced automatic robot technologies in production monitoring and real-time product quality inspection, helping businesses not only improve productivity but also meet strict international standards. These solutions are creating a big step forward in digital transformation and optimizing production processes, which goes hand in hand with the trend of AI and automation that is growing strongly globally.
