In a letter to the Security Council on January 13, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations (UN) affirmed that Iran is supporting the armed group Hezbollah to "recover and re-equip", and declared that the gunmen remain a "serious threat" to Tel Aviv as well as regional stability.

Israel and Hezbollah have agreed to a 60-day ceasefire starting on November 27, 2024, brokered by the United States and France after more than a year of conflict. The terms call for the Lebanese army to deploy to the south of the country while Israel and Hezbollah withdraw their forces. Hezbollah will leave its positions in southern Lebanon and move north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers from the Israeli border. Meanwhile, the Lebanese army will deploy about 5,000 soldiers south of the Litani River, including 33 posts along the border with Israel.
However, both sides accused each other of violating this agreement.
Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon stressed on January 13 that Hezbollah "is trying to recover its strength and re-equip with the help of Iran after the group's military capabilities were significantly reduced during the conflict."
The Hezbollah and Iranian missions to the UN have not yet responded.
Ambassador Danon said that the important thing now is for "the Beirut government and the international community to focus on preventing the smuggling of weapons, ammunition, and financial support at the Syria-Lebanon border and air and sea routes".
Israel has also long criticized the UN Interim Force for Peacekeeping in the Southern Borders of Lebanon (UNIFIL). Since the ceasefire agreement was signed, "there have been numerous attempts to transfer weapons and money to Hezbollah," Danon said, adding that the militant group has continued to increase its military activity near UNIFIL bases and patrols.
"Despite this, UNIFIL refuses to take all necessary actions to ensure that its area of operations is not used by hostile forces in any way. And today, we are witnessing once again the refusal of this force to fully carry out its mandate," Mr. Danon criticized.
However, senior UN officials have repeatedly stressed that UNIFIL only has a supporting role and cannot be blamed for the failure of the parties to implement Resolution 1701.
