Israel destroys several buildings in the West Bank, Hamas calls for "escalation of resistance"

According to the Palestinian state news agency, the Israeli army on February 2 carried out a series of attacks in the West Bank, flattening about 20 buildings in the Jenin refugee camp.

Thick plumes of smoke rose over the city of Jenin, where Israeli forces have been conducting a large-scale operation for nearly two weeks.

Tel Aviv said the operation targeted local militants and seized weapons caches. A spokesman for the Israeli military said “a number of structures used as terrorist infrastructure” had been dismantled.

Jenin Government Hospital Director Wisam Baker said part of the hospital was damaged by the explosions but there were no casualties.

Jenin is a densely populated area built to house the descendants of Palestinians who were expelled or forced to leave their homes during the 1948 war that saw the founding of the state of Israel.

The refugee camp here has long been a center of militant activity and has been the target of numerous raids by Israel.

With the support of helicopters and armored bulldozers, on January 21, Israel began a large-scale offensive operation called "Iron Wall" in the city of Jenin, two days after reaching a ceasefire agreement with the armed group Hamas.

Many Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli military operation began, including the elderly and children. The Israeli army claims to have killed at least 35 militants and arrested more than 100 wanted individuals.

In particular, the series of explosions on February 2 further raised tensions as Tel Aviv increased attacks on Palestinian infrastructure.

On the same day, Hamas called for “escalation of resistance” against Israel after the destruction of a series of buildings in Jenin.
