Chelsea have agreed to pay a £5m fine to avoid triggering a buy-out clause for Jadon Sancho, sending the 25-year-old back to Manchester United, who are also not expecting him to return.

To be honest, his loan spell at the Blues wasn’t a bad one. He played 41 games in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing four assists. There were some memorable moments, including the goal that sparked the 4-3 comeback against Tottenham, the equaliser that salvaged a point at Ipswich from 2-2 and the strike that made it 3-0 in the Conference League final last month.

But that’s not enough to convince Chelsea to spend £25m and £300,000 a week. Last season, the left wing position in the Blues’ 4-2-3-1 formation was occupied by six players, and Sancho wasn’t the best of them. If they were to sign more, they have better options, such as Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens or United’s own Alejandro Garnacho.

Jadon Sancho had hoped to turn his career around with a move to Chelsea, but was not good enough to stay.

For United, Sancho's return has added to the problems for Ruben Amorim and sporting director Jason Wilcox. The Red Devils have twice tried to get rid of Sancho, by sending him on loan to Dortmund and Chelsea with an option to buy. Both times Sancho has returned, creating an awkward situation.

No one could have imagined this outcome four years ago when Sancho arrived at Old Trafford for £73m, the fourth most expensive transfer in the club's history. The south London-born player described it as a "dream come true" as the Red Devils believed they had secured a star ready to take the Premier League by storm.

In his four years at Dortmund, Sancho has established himself as one of the most promising wingers in the world . With his technique, dribbling ability, balance and talent for spotting opportunities, Sancho is a difficult player to deal with. His 50 goals and countless assists in the Black and Yellow shirt are proof of that.

The goal in the Conference League final became Sancho's last in a Blues shirt.

Unfortunately, Sancho's talent was never fully exploited at MU. Having difficulty integrating, he was unable to score goals under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. When the Norwegian coach was fired and Ralf Rangnick arrived, things did not improve much. Entering the reign of Erik ten Hag, when his performance on the field showed signs of recovery, external problems ruined Sancho.

The indiscipline that got Sancho into trouble with England U19s and the England national team has now frustrated Ten Hag. The situation has become so tense that the Dutch coach has said outright that Sancho is not on the registration list because he is not good enough on the training ground, both physically and mentally. Instead of proving his performance, he has hit back at his coach, accusing the criticism of being lies, and that he is just a scapegoat for MU's poor performance.

Even when his teammates advised Sancho to apologize, he still refused, then found a way to escape MU. Ironically, what he showed at Dortmund and Chelsea only supported Ten Hag's point of view. Sancho completely failed to reproduce his peak form. His dribbling became predictable, his decisions were often wrong and his finishing also lost its sharpness.

Sancho’s future is uncertain. He has never played under Amorim, but that is unlikely given the signing of Matheus Cunha. In a tight financial climate, they will not pay £300,000 a week for a reserve player. Furthermore, Sancho himself has no desire to play for United. But where he will play is still up in the air.
