The event was attended by media representatives, transport experts and officials from both Vietnam and Japan, emphasizing the importance of bilateral cooperation in improving infrastructure and quality of life for people.
Mr. Sugano Yuichi, Chief Representative of JICA in Vietnam, opened the press conference by thanking the Vietnamese government and people for their close cooperation over the past time. "We are committed to continuing to accompany Vietnam in developing infrastructure, improving the living environment and promoting sustainable development," said Mr. Sugano. He also shared more about the key projects that JICA has been implementing, especially in the field of transport infrastructure.
In recent years, Vietnam has made great progress in improving its transport infrastructure, with strong support from Japanese ODA. Most notable are projects such as Metro Line 1 in Ho Chi Minh City and Yen Xa wastewater treatment plant in Hanoi . These projects not only help improve the quality of urban transport but also contribute greatly to environmental protection, emission reduction and improving the quality of life for millions of Vietnamese people.
According to JICA, the agency is currently implementing 23 ODA projects, with a total committed capital of about 102.207 billion Japanese yen (equivalent to about 678 million USD). One of the most important projects is Metro Line 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, which is currently in the trial phase. This metro line is expected to help reduce traffic congestion and provide a green, environmentally friendly means of transport. "When put into operation, Metro Line 1 will significantly reduce CO2 emissions and provide a safe, efficient means of transport for the city's residents," Mr. Sugano added.
In addition, the Yen Xa wastewater treatment plant project in Hanoi, when completed, will be one of the largest in the region, contributing significantly to improving water pollution treatment. This project not only meets the needs of urban wastewater treatment but also protects public health, reduces the risk of pollution and improves the quality of the living environment of the capital's residents.
In addition to transport infrastructure and the environment, JICA also supports Vietnam in other important areas such as health, education and disaster management. JICA has completed five technical cooperation projects and is currently implementing 33 others, with a total cost of approximately 5.219 billion Japanese Yen (equivalent to approximately 35 million USD). In the health sector, JICA cooperates with leading hospitals such as K Hospital in Hanoi and Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City to upgrade equipment and train doctors and nurses to meet the increasing demand for medical services.
In the field of disaster prevention, JICA is working with Vietnamese agencies to implement measures to reduce the risk of floods and landslides in areas heavily affected by climate change, especially in the central and northern regions of Vietnam. These projects aim to “Build Back Better” after each disaster, laying the foundation for sustainable development and minimizing damage caused by disasters.
JICA also pays special attention to human resource development in Vietnam. Over the years, the organization has implemented scholarship programs, supported training and capacity building for thousands of Vietnamese students and officials. Mr. Sugano said that developing high-quality human resources is the key for Vietnam to improve its competitiveness in the context of international integration. "We want to create a generation of human resources capable of contributing to Vietnam's development in many different fields, especially technology and science," Mr. Sugano emphasized.
With 12 completed projects and 36 ongoing projects, JICA continues to affirm its role in supporting infrastructure development and improving the quality of life of Vietnamese people.
At the end of the press conference, Mr. Sugano once again affirmed JICA's commitment to accompany Vietnam in the process of socio-economic development. JICA not only provides financial aid but also technical assistance, experience sharing and technology to help Vietnam achieve sustainable development goals. "We believe that, with close cooperation between the two countries, Vietnam will continue to develop strongly and become one of the advanced economies in the region," Mr. Sugano concluded.
