That's veteran Le Van Tuoi (residing in Hamlet 1, Trung An Commune, My Tho City, Tien Giang Province), a renowned ornamental fish breeder known for his high economic efficiency. Starting with over a dozen pairs of ornamental fish bought by his son for hobby purposes, and then successfully breeding them, Mr. Tuoi immediately thought of raising and selling them. Today, Mr. Tuoi owns a fairly large-scale ornamental fish farm, earning hundreds of millions of dong in profit annually.

In 1976, Mr. Tươi volunteered to join the army and was assigned to the Office of the 9th Military Region Command (production department). In 1981, he transferred to work at the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (LĐTB&XH) of Tien Giang province and lived in Trung An commune, My Tho city.
“At that time, I was assigned to be the Head of the Job Placement Department at the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Tien Giang province. Besides my government job, I also did some extra work to improve my family's life. Initially, I invested in raising crabs, then eels, which was unsuccessful. After that, I switched to raising tilapia. The process of raising them for 22 years yielded profits, but things didn't go as well later on.”
"When my son bought more than a dozen pairs of ornamental fish to raise for pleasure, and then successfully bred them, I immediately thought about raising and selling ornamental fish. Since then, I've been involved in this profession until now," Mr. Tuoi recounted.
Mr. Tuoi said that at the beginning of 2020, he sold his first batch of ornamental fish at a price of at least 30,000 VND per pair, with a maximum of 100,000 VND, generating revenue of 15 to 20 million VND per month. Currently, Mr. Tuoi's family has nearly a hundred tarpaulins, glass ponds, and cement tanks for raising various ornamental fish species, such as: Five-colored fish, goldfish, blue-green fish, rainbow fish, and jellyfish… with a total area of about 1,000 m2.
Currently, Mr. Tuoi has successfully bred the fish, releasing approximately 200 fingerlings per cubic meter of water, significantly reducing costs for breeders. Regarding feed, ornamental fish mainly eat tubifex worms, with about 5-10 kg of worms per day, supplemented with pellets, commercial feed, and Thai fishmeal powder.
Regarding the technique of raising ornamental fish, according to Mr. Tuoi, it's not difficult; they can be raised in glass tanks, cement ponds, lakes, styrofoam containers, etc. Therefore, raising ornamental fish to increase income is considered an urban agricultural economic model that anyone can do.
Mr. Tuoi is one of the leading farmers and war veterans in applying science, technology, and new techniques to production and business, achieving high economic efficiency from his ornamental fish farming and trading model, earning over 100 million VND per year and creating jobs for dozens of workers.
Mr. Tuoi is also the head of the ornamental fish group in Trung An commune. In this role, he has encouraged dozens of households (mainly war veterans with difficult circumstances) to join the ornamental fish group and guided them in selecting breeds, breeding, and farming techniques... to improve their income and contribute to sustainable poverty reduction in the locality.
Not only has Mr. Tươi achieved success in his ornamental fish farming and business model, enriching himself, but he also actively participates in many social activities, supporting production and business, and helping poor, disadvantaged, and policy-beneficiary households in the locality by allocating a portion of his family's income and mobilizing businesses and philanthropists to provide 1,000 gift packages and 5 tons of rice each year for needy people in the area.
For his contributions, from 2020 to the present, veteran Le Van Tuoi has received numerous Certificates of Merit and Commendations from the Farmers' Association at all levels and the People's Committee of Trung An commune for his outstanding achievements in the emulation movement of excellent production and business, solidarity in helping each other get rich and sustainably reduce poverty.
