A customer surnamed Liu shared his memorable experience with a reporter from Shin Min Daily News . Mr. Liu said that on February 23, he went to the Dutch Village Food Centre and Market in Singapore to order a medium-sized cup of sugarcane juice with a little lime juice and asked for some ice.
"When paying, the owner said it was 5 SGD (nearly 100,000 VND). At first, I thought he was joking because it was impossible for a simple cup of sugarcane juice to be that expensive. But after asking again, the owner said the cost had increased so the price was also affected," said the 60-year-old customer.
Previously, Mr. Luu had just bought a beef rice bowl at a nearby stall for 6 SGD (110,000 VND), so he questioned the sugarcane juice shop owner that the price of the drink was "too high".
Not satisfied with this experience, Mr. Luu shared it on his personal page. Some people shared the same opinion that although Singapore is an expensive place, this cup of sugarcane juice is too expensive.
"Or does the owner import fresh sugarcane from the Netherlands, so the price is high?", a netizen sarcastically said.
"Obviously, the place I go to buy is just a popular area for ordinary people to shop and eat. But now even street vendors are causing price stress for consumers, so where is the problem?", Mr. Luu asked.
When a reporter from Shin Min Daily News went to inquire, a 75-year-old salesman named Michael said he had been in business for 15 years and had never received any complaints from customers.
"I have clearly listed the prices of drinks at the counter. In the past two days, the shop has not received any complaints from customers. If anyone wants to complain, they should speak directly to me," the shop owner said.
According to Mr. Michael, on the first and second days of Lunar New Year, the restaurant increased prices a bit, but then returned to the old prices as usual.
The drinks come in three sizes: regular (2.5 SGD - 46,000 VND); large (3.5 SGD - 65,000 VND) and king (4.5 SGD - 84,000 VND). If a customer requests less ice, they will have to pay an additional 1 SGD (18,000 VND) and 0.5 SGD (9,000 VND) for lemon juice. So the total amount the customer will pay is 5 SGD (100,000 VND) according to the listed price.
"We don't overcharge. This price has been applied for the past year," said the owner.
