The festival aims to pay tribute to the great scholars, contributing to the preservation and promotion of traditional cultural values of studiousness and respect for teachers, enriching the cultural identity of the nation.

Mao Dien Temple of Literature is the second largest monument in the Vietnamese Temple of Literature system, inheriting and continuing the legacy of the ancient Hai Duong Temple of Literature. Originally built in the 15th century in Vinh Lai commune, Duong An district, it was moved to Mao Dien commune during the reign of Quang Trung in the late 18th century, merged with a school and examination center, and became a leading institution for training thousands of Confucian scholars and doctors nationwide.

Mao Dien Temple of Literature worships Confucius, the founder of Confucianism, and also venerates eight prominent scholars: Teacher Chu Van An, the teacher of all generations; Mac Dinh Chi, the two-time top scholar; Pham Su Manh, the high-ranking official; the renowned physician and Zen master Tue Tinh; the national hero and world cultural figure Nguyen Trai; the Vietnamese mathematical genius and Doctor Vu Huu; Trinh Quoc Cong and top scholar Nguyen Binh Khiem; and Doctor Nguyen Thi Due, the first female doctor of Vietnam (during the Mac Dynasty).

Through the ups and downs of history, the Mao Dien Temple of Literature has been preserved and its values promoted, becoming a place to honor scholarship, wisdom, and talent in the ancient Eastern region. The site was classified as a special national monument in 2017, a symbol of the cultural heritage of the Eastern region. It also hosts many educational activities such as gatherings and honoring of new-generation doctoral graduates from the Eastern region, incense offerings, commendations for outstanding students, and educational science seminars. The traditional Mao Dien Temple of Literature festival is held annually on the 17th and 18th of the second lunar month, attracting many visitors from all over, local people, and representatives of families with doctoral graduates whose names are recorded at the Temple of Literature.

Following the incense offering ceremony was the ritual of offering calligraphy to the Saints, with the participation of the calligraphy team from Mau Tai village, Mao Dien commune, Cam Giang district, offering the four characters "Respect the Teacher, Cherish the Way". This ritual expresses gratitude to the ancestors, values learning, and upholds the tradition of studiousness of the Vietnamese people and the ancient Eastern region, now Hai Duong.

This year's festival, in addition to traditional rituals, calligraphy art performances and exchanges, a quiz on the history of historical sites and famous figures worshipped at the Temple of Literature, a beautiful handwriting contest, Quan Ho folk singing on boats, and folk games, also features a new element: the display and introduction of 20 OCOP products from Cam Giang district.
