At around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon (November 9), the technical unit conducted a geological exploration drill at the Cay An reservoir dam body. After the exploration drilling, the specialized units will evaluate and consider the plan and quantity of waterproofing chemicals to be injected into the dam body.
According to the plan, tomorrow, November 10, the construction unit will drill and inject waterproofing chemicals to reinforce the dam body. Before conducting the exploratory drilling, this morning, November 9, the relevant units, construction contractors and experts from the Department of Management and Construction of Irrigation Works under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment held a meeting to evaluate the solution to the problem.
Currently, 4 pumps are still operating at full capacity to reduce the water level in the lake as quickly as possible to reduce pressure on the dam body.

According to the plan, after drilling and evaluating the geology of the Cay An reservoir dam body, the construction unit will drill 48 holes and inject waterproofing chemicals to reinforce the dam body and completely fix the water seepage problem. This work is expected to take about 15 days. In addition, the authorities will conduct a survey and treat the entire dam body, which is expected to take about 30 days.
In the long term, the project will be reinforced with additional rock gabions at the dam shoulders; at the same time, it will be handed over to a professional management and operation unit in the field of irrigation to carry out regular maintenance and repair.

Previously, on the afternoon of November 7, due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain from storm Kalmaegi, the water level in Cay An Lake increased rapidly, causing a crack about 54m long, 2m deep, and 0.2 - 0.5m wide to appear at the foot of the dam near the spillway. The crack is at risk of continuing to spread if the bad weather continues, potentially causing a dam failure.
Immediately after discovering the incident, the authorities mobilized more than 200 people and machinery to work through the night to fix the problem. By the afternoon of November 8, the water seepage had been basically resolved, the main cracks had been temporarily repaired, ensuring the initial safety of the dam body.
Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has arranged for the department's leaders and the Head of the Irrigation Sub-Department to be on site to supervise the implementation of the Cay An Lake incident remediation.
