The only golden season of the year

These days, the fields in the border commune of Quang Chieu, Thanh Hoa province, are bustling with the laughter of people during the harvest season of Cay Noi sticky rice. This is a special sticky rice variety that can only be grown once a year, turning the terraced fields into a shimmering golden carpet, as beautiful as a painting.

"Pearl" of the Thai people

For the Thai people in Quang Chieu commune, Cay Noi sticky rice is not only a staple food but also considered a "pearl" associated with customs, festivals and memories through many generations. The rice grains are plump, sticky and fragrant, when cooked into rice, it has a mild fragrance and stays sticky for a long time. This precious sticky rice is often used in important occasions such as ancestor worship, celebrating new rice or weddings.

From traditional food to agricultural brand

Previously, people mainly grew Cay Noi sticky rice to serve their family's needs. However, in recent years, thanks to its special quality, this sticky rice variety has become known to many people and has gradually built its own brand. This has encouraged people to expand the cultivation area to supply the market.

Source of life from terraced fields

The terraced rice fields, winding between valleys along the Sim River, not only create a beautiful landscape but are also the main source of income for many households. Ms. Vi Thi Soi (41 years old, Chiem village) shared: "If the harvest is good, each crop my family can harvest and sell nearly 20 million VND worth of sticky rice. The money is enough to cover the children's education and living expenses, so I am very happy."

According to the leader of the People's Committee of Quang Chieu commune, the whole commune has more than 335 hectares of Cay Noi sticky rice, bringing in revenue of more than 20 billion VND per year. The rice harvest here still retains its traditional features when it is completely done by hand, without using machines.

New direction associated with agricultural tourism

The local government has identified the development of Cay Noi sticky rice as a key direction in socio -economic development. The goal is not only to preserve the precious native rice variety but also to build a brand associated with agricultural tourism, thereby creating a sustainable livelihood for local people.
