To keep customers staying longer...

The average length of stay for tourists in Da Nang has not changed significantly recently, indicating that the local tourism industry needs to continue improving its attractiveness to retain visitors for longer periods.

Little movement

It is projected that in 2025, Da Nang's tourism sector will serve approximately 17.3 million overnight visitors, including about 7.6 million international tourists. This is a significant number (estimated growth of around 37% per year during the 2020-2025 period), demonstrating Da Nang's attractiveness as a destination, but in terms of retaining visitors, there has not been much progress.

Data from the city's Statistics Department shows that the average length of stay for overnight tourists in the first 10 months of 2025 was 1.87 days per visitor. Of these, international tourists stayed 2 days per visitor, while domestic tourists stayed 1.75 days per visitor. Compared to the same period last year, these figures remained almost unchanged. In fact, compared to 2015, these indicators have slightly decreased, partly due to the consolidation of administrative units.

Compared to some localities with strongly developed tourism activities and similar strengths in coastal and island tourism such as Quang Ninh or Khanh Hoa , it can be seen that the average length of stay of tourists in Da Nang is still quite modest.

According to travel agencies, a popular tour for international tourists in Central Vietnam usually lasts about 5-7 days. However, since the region has many other unique destinations, tourists can allocate their stay more effectively to experience a wider variety of attractions.

At the recently concluded Da Nang International Tourism Festival 2025, Mr. Nguyen Trung Khanh, Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), stated that Da Nang's infrastructure and technical facilities have been continuously upgraded over the past time. The city has also invested heavily in iconic and experiential tourism products; however, overall, the results achieved are still modest compared to the potential and advantages of an international tourism center.

Da Nang still lacks world-class products to attract more high-end tourists, its ability to adapt to unpredictable fluctuations is low, and its seasonality and dependence on a few markets remain pronounced.

Enhance customer retention capabilities.

During the period 2026-2030, Da Nang aims for an average annual growth rate of 14-15% in the accommodation, travel, and food service sectors; and an average annual growth rate of approximately 10-11% in the total number of guests served by accommodation establishments.

It is clear that local tourism is setting ambitious goals, aiming to develop tourism into a key economic sector. Keeping tourists staying longer will encourage them to spend more, so this indicator needs to be given more attention.

Following the merger, Da Nang now has 57 tourist areas and attractions; of which 27 have been officially recognized under the Tourism Law. Quite a few of these are located in the rural and mountainous areas of the city.

Therefore, according to experts, to increase the length of stay for tourists in the area, it is necessary to create seamless "arc" itineraries connecting Da Nang or Hoi An with rural tourist destinations in the west and south of the city.

However, the reality is that despite possessing a very large number of accommodation establishments (over 2,250), including the highest number of 4-5 star luxury accommodations in the country, the majority of these establishments are concentrated in the city center and the northern coastal area.

The current challenge is that retaining tourists at a destination requires both attractive products and services and high-quality accommodation facilities.

Local practice shows that in the area near the My Son heritage site (Thu Bon commune), although standard accommodation facilities (resorts) have recently been established, the occupancy rate is quite low due to the lack of unique nighttime offerings and a series of satellite experiential products linked to the heritage site.

Conversely, in the southwestern mountainous region, although attractive eco-tourism products are gradually being developed, the lack of standard accommodation makes it difficult for tour operators to design well-structured tours.

According to Mr. Le Quoc Viet, Director of Santa Sea Villa Hoi An Hotel (Hoi An Tay Ward), almost every year there are groups of tourists from the Nordic market who stay for extended periods at the hotel. Some guests even stay much longer than planned, captivated by the experience of exploring the Quang Nam countryside.

"In the short term, we need more solutions to attract tourists who want to stay for extended periods during the winter. This is an important market that can be targeted immediately to extend the length of stay for tourists," Mr. Viet suggested.
