Realizing that, in recent years, all levels and functional branches in the province have implemented many synchronous measures, mobilizing people to stay away from cigarette smoke, protecting their own health and that of the community.

In the green campus of Lang Son Lung Hospital, from the examination hall to the corridors, departments, rooms and patient rooms, it is easy to see "No smoking" signs posted in visible locations. Doctor Nguyen Son Hieu, Deputy Director of Lang Son Lung Hospital, said: Through actual treatment, we have found that about 70% of patients hospitalized for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have a history of long-term smoking. Some people have significantly improved their health after quitting smoking, but there are also cases where the disease is detected late, with severe lung damage, making treatment difficult.
In recent years, Lang Son Lung Hospital has maintained the model of "Smoke-free hospital", promoting smoking cessation counseling for people during treatment. In order for patients to quit smoking, every day, during the examination process, officers, doctors, and nurses in departments and rooms regularly propagate the harmful effects of cigarette smoke to patients and their families. Propaganda is also carried out in monthly patient council meetings; direct counseling and guidance over the phone for outpatients; leaflets are distributed in departments and rooms (more than 1,000 leaflets/year)... All medical staff are exemplary in not smoking on hospital grounds. In particular, the hospital also maintains the Life Breath Club with nearly 700 members participating. The club meets periodically once a quarter to advise and guide patients on using medication according to the treatment regimen and quitting smoking to protect their own health and that of others. people around
Mr. Ly Van Son, 62 years old, Con Pu village, Diem He commune shared: I have smoked since I was 18 years old. After many years, I often coughed, had difficulty breathing, and took medicine but it did not help. In March 2024, I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. During the treatment, the doctors explained very clearly the harmful effects of cigarettes and advised me to quit completely so that the treatment would have better results. Since then, I have been determined to quit smoking, and my health has gradually improved.
Mr. Son's story shows that staying away from cigarettes and giving up the habit of smoking is extremely necessary to proactively protect your health and the health of those around you from the harmful effects of cigarettes.
Not only limited to the scope of each hospital, the work of building a smoke-free environment is being implemented synchronously by all levels and sectors in the province. The focus is on propaganda and mobilizing people to prevent and combat the harmful effects of tobacco, and to give up the habit of smoking. On average, each year, the whole province has distributed more than 7,000 leaflets on the harmful effects of tobacco on health, measures to quit smoking, handbooks on counseling and treatment for smoking cessation, etc.
In the community, the “no smoking” movement has also spread strongly. In Ky Lua ward, Mr. Nguyen Van Chien, a resident who has smoked for more than 10 years, shared: I was encouraged by the elderly association and participated in a communication session on the harmful effects of tobacco. After that, I was determined to quit smoking. Since quitting, my health has improved, and my children and grandchildren are happy. Now I also encourage my friends to quit smoking.
The results achieved demonstrate the determination of all levels, sectors, agencies, units and the consensus of the people in building a smoke-free environment. Every Lang Son resident, when saying “no” to cigarettes, is contributing to the journey of creating a clean environment for the health of the community.
