Tomoko Horino, born in Fukushima, Japan, turned 102 on April 9. After getting married at the age of 21, she worked for a telecommunications corporation. To cover family expenses and be able to work and take care of her children at the same time, she started a job as a consultant and cosmetics seller in a beauty shop.

Ms. Tomoko has been working as a beauty consultant for about 62 years. Every day, she travels to work 7km from her home by bus. Instead of choosing to retire, she continues to contribute and always shows her love and passion for her work.
One of the secrets to her health and longevity is “working”. In the book “ The Joy of Still Working - I am 102 years old ”, Ms. Tomoko shares some secrets to help herself maintain a healthy and long life.
Work
Work helps maintain cognitive activity, creating purpose and joy in life. Keeping the mind active and having a clear purpose are important factors in improving health and prolonging life.
According to scientific studies, continuing to work into old age brings significant benefits to both physical and mental health. Specifically, each additional year an elderly person works can reduce the risk of mental decline by 3 to 5%.
Go out and socialize with people
Socializing and getting out regularly improves mental and physical health, reduces stress, and can contribute to longevity. These activities help build social connections, bring joy and happiness.
You can choose simple ways to start the process of communicating with people such as spending time meeting and chatting with friends, relatives, neighbors, participating in community activities, going to the park to meet people or actively communicating with children and grandchildren to create closeness in the family.
Create a little joy every day
She shared: “ Every day I spend about an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening taking care of my skin very carefully. In the morning, I always put on makeup, even if I don’t have any appointments that day. I still apply foundation, powder, and lipstick, I’m never lazy. ”
Anyone can be happy if they live each day the way they love and find joy. Because human life is made up of each small day accumulated together.
Not picky, especially like eel
Despite her age, Tomoko still keeps the habit of cooking for herself. She is not picky about food, her favorite dish is eel.
Experts say that Tomoko's varied diet is a very good habit. For the elderly, eating properly and absorbing all the nutrients in a balanced way is extremely important.
