TP – New students from other provinces admitted to universities in Hanoi will begin enrolling until early September.
| Although students lack accommodation, the student housing area of Phap Van - Tu Hiep is still unoccupied because of inconvenient transportation. |
Ms. Tran Diu ( Hai Phong ) has just joined the old university class group to ask friends who are working and living in Hanoi to recommend accommodation for their children in Dong Da district, near Hanoi Medical University. Ms. Diu's child was admitted to the medical school but was not eligible to stay in the dormitory, so she has been looking for a place to stay for a whole week now, but still has not found one because there are no rooms to rent.
On the Phuong Dong University fanpage, since the beginning of August, some new students who were admitted early have posted information about finding roommates. Nguyen Van Tuan, a new student majoring in Information Technology at the university, said that finding seniors to share a room with will be easier than finding a new place to stay. Moreover, being students at the same school, they can support each other in studying and working part-time in the future. This is also the way many new students who do not have economic conditions choose to have a place to stay in the upcoming university years in Hanoi.
A reporter’s survey shows that this year’s room rental prices range from 1 to 1.7 million VND/month depending on the room size and number of people in the room. However, students’ electricity and water prices are calculated based on business prices, so they are quite high.
For example, in Me Tri Thuong area, the price of electricity is 3,500 VND/kWh; domestic water is 30,000 VND/m3. In Lang - Trung Hoa, Nhan Chinh area (Thanh Xuan), the price of electricity is 4,000 VND/kWh, water is 35,000 - 40,000 VND/m3. Thus, including electricity, water, sanitation, and internet costs, students have to spend about 2 - 2.5 million VND per month on accommodation. For families with economic conditions who rent mini apartments, the cost will be even higher, from 3.5 - 4 million VND/month.
In Hanoi today, no university has enough dormitory space to meet the needs of students, including the dormitory at Hoa Lac of Hanoi National University. Currently, dormitories only meet the needs of students who are eligible for policies according to government regulations. This year, new students are facing another difficulty when renting a room because the number of rooms has decreased.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Ngoc Khiem, Vice Director of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the university's dormitory only provides about 1,000 accommodations each year, but the demand must double or triple. Mr. Khiem acknowledged that this year, students are having difficulty renting houses because of fire prevention requirements. Although the schools know that students are having difficulties, they cannot expand or build more dormitories because of difficulties and many problems.
