5. Who was the founder of Indochina Medical School - the predecessor of Hanoi Medical University?
- Alexandre Yersin0%
- Louis Pasteur0%
- Pierre Daléas0%
Alexandre Yersin is considered the founder of the Indochina Medical School, the predecessor of Hanoi Medical University.
Yersin brought humanism and progressive spirit into Vietnamese medical education.
During his two and a half years as director (1902-1904), he laid the foundation for a formal and modern medical school in Southeast Asia, with training regulations similar to those of the University of Medicine in Paris.
The first difficulty he faced was that the level of students recruited was low, only enough to train nurses. He opened a cultural supplementary class, helping students to continue studying to become physicians. Thanks to that, the school later had the conditions to upgrade to a college, then a university.
The second difficulty was the opposition of the colonial government, which did not agree with many of his progressive policies. Yersin eventually had to leave his position, but before leaving, he moved the school out of Kinh Luoc village, built a new facility on Bobillot Street (now Le Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi) and a practice hospital on Lo Duc Street - the foundation for the first university medical system in Vietnam.
