In late October, the Russian Army Group Center (RFAF) continued to launch a large-scale operation with 29 armored vehicles north of Pokrovsk, aiming to attack the flanks of Shakhove and Volodymyrivka, about 18 km northeast of Pokrovsk. The Ukrainian Deep State channel said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) once again repelled the attack, destroying two tanks and 12 armored vehicles, and killing several Russian infantry. There are many related videos filmed by Ukrainian drones, and posted on the Internet.
Both the Russian and Ukrainian militaries are now pouring more troops and resources toward Pokrovsk. The Kremlin has demanded that Pokrovsk be captured by mid-November. The fighting is fierce, with videos shot by Russian and Ukrainian forces showing the skies almost filled with FPV drones from both sides. Currently, Russian FPV UAVs have almost completely blocked the positions and supply lines of the Ukrainian defense forces. Although Ukrainian FPV UAVs have caused casualties to the attacking Russian forces, the defense operations of the Ukrainian army in Pokrovsk are being greatly hampered by Russian FPV UAVs. Pokrovsk is now under attack from four sides, with only a 1.5km wide “pocket” in the north. Ukrainian forces continue to launch counter-offensives in the south, but face constant heavy attacks from Russian forces in the north. The situation is very difficult and is expected to last until mid-November, beyond the Kremlin’s “red line”. The Ukrainian newspaper Pravda published an article pointing out the problems that Pokrovsk is currently facing: First, the AFU General Staff reacted too slowly to the escalation of the situation in Pokrovsk and failed to deploy additional troops and resources in time;
Second, the initial counteroffensive victories of the AFU at the “Dobropilya salient” masked the pressure that Pokrovsk was facing. Third, the AFU command at the front still had the problem of concealing information, which led to erroneous assessments by superiors. Commander-in-Chief Syrsky once again criticized this. Fourth, the RFAF had air superiority, continuously dropping heavy guided bombs on Pokrovsk. Although the Ukrainian military responded with a number of measures, including jamming and interception, these remained nightmare weapons for Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines. According to the Kyiv Independent, several elite Ukrainian units, including special forces, have been deployed to Pokrovsk to destroy Russian infantry that has entered the city. However, there is no information yet that this Russian infantry force has been destroyed. Furthermore, Russian infantry may have occupied more urban areas in Pokrovsk; according to the latest information from Military Review, the RFAF now controls up to 80% of the city. Objectively, the situation in Pokrovsk is “very dangerous”. Many strategic cities that Ukraine has lost before have experienced this situation before collapsing. The question is whether Pokrovsk can hold out until mid-November, depending on how the Russian and Ukrainian forces fight. The RFAF still has the overall advantage and to achieve the Kremlin's goals, they launch attacks at all costs and keep up the attacks. While the AFU has the defensive advantage.
According to Ukrainian media, despite calls, including from the AFU command, there will be no retreat from Pokrovsk. Ukrainian expert Sergei “Flash” Beskrestnov reported today that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has decided to hold Pokrovsk “to the last breath”. According to Mr. Beskrestnov, the AFU General Staff decided to concentrate its reserves near Pokrovsk, regardless of the losses. According to the General Staff, the city is too important to continue defending; the entire Dnipropetrovsk region lies behind Pokrovsk, which currently has no strong defense line. A crucial decision has been made by President Zelensky to hold the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad region for as long as possible. All available reserves will be deployed for this purpose. Holding Pokrovsk is important from a military point of view, as it is an outpost protecting an almost flat area deep in the Dnipropetrovsk region.
Earlier, Ukrainian military officials stated that President Zelensky would be fully responsible for the encirclement of the Ukrainian defense group; every unit must put military interests first. In particular, the Ukrainian group in the Myrnohrad urban area is now also at risk of being completely encircled if the Pokrovsk urban area falls.
