(CPV) - Within the framework of the 19th ASIAD taking place in Hangzhou (China), Vietnamese sports continued to receive good news when swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang - the only athlete of the Vietnamese Swimming Team participating in the final won a Bronze Medal in the men's 800m freestyle event, with a time of 7 minutes 51.44 seconds. This achievement also helped Huy Hoang reach standard A, winning a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nguyen Huy Hoang became the third Vietnamese athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Huy Hoang's 800m freestyle performance at the 19th Asian Games was 2.88 seconds better than the Bronze Medal he won at the 18th Asian Games in 2018 in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the Quang Binh swimmer's best performance in this event was 7 minutes 50 seconds 20, at the 2018 Youth Olympics.
Immediately after winning the Bronze Medal, Huy Hoang said in an interview with the media: "Although today's achievement is not as good as at the 18th ASIAD, winning a medal at this Games is a great joy and happiness for me. In the men's 1500m freestyle final 2 days ago, due to psychological pressure and not being strong enough in the long distance, I missed the opportunity to win a medal, but in today's final, I did it. I regained my feeling and completed my competition. ASIAD only takes place once every 4 years, so winning a medal gives me more confidence and excitement."
The Gold Medal winner in this event was Kim Woo Min (Korea) with a time of 7 minutes 46.03 seconds - breaking the Games record. The Silver Medal was won by Chinese athlete Fei Liwei with a time of 7 minutes 49.90 seconds. With the Bronze Medal, Huy Hoang surpassed the A standard (7 minutes 51.65 seconds) to officially qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. This is the second time Huy Hoang has officially won a ticket to the Olympics./.
