Since the 26th Central Committee meeting on preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negative phenomena on August 14th, six high-ranking officials under the management of the Politburo and the Secretariat have been disciplined.
Adding the task of preventing and combating waste.
On the afternoon of October 30th, the Central Internal Affairs Commission held a press conference to provide information about the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Central Steering Committee on preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negative phenomena (the Steering Committee) which took place that morning.
General Secretary To Lam chaired the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Central Steering Committee on preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negative phenomena on October 30.
According to Deputy Head of the Central Internal Affairs Commission Dang Van Dung, on October 29, the Politburo issued Regulation No. 191-QĐ/TW on the functions, tasks, powers, working regime, and working relationships of the Steering Committee (replacing Regulation No. 32/2021) and Decision No. 192-QĐ/TW on consolidating the Central Steering Committee on preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negative phenomena.
"This includes adding to the Steering Committee's nhiệm vụ of preventing and combating waste, with a focus on preventing and combating waste in the management and use of public finances and public assets," Mr. Dung said.
Therefore, the Standing Committee of the Steering Committee requests that Party committees, Party organizations, and functional agencies both continue to further strengthen the work of preventing and combating corruption, waste, and negative phenomena, and focus on directing and strengthening the work of preventing and combating waste; recognizing that preventing and combating waste is of equivalent importance to preventing and combating corruption and negative phenomena.
Regarding future tasks, the Steering Committee requested the decisive handling of serious, complex, and highly publicized cases of corruption and misconduct. The goal is to complete the investigation, prosecution, and trial of 12 cases and 2 incidents by the end of 2024.
This includes the preliminary trial of two key cases as planned by the Steering Committee, namely: the case involving the Project Management Board for Medical Construction Projects under the Department of Health of Bac Ninh province, AIC International Progress Joint Stock Company and related units; and the case involving Xuyen Viet Oil Trading, Transportation and Tourism Company Limited and a number of related agencies and organizations.
The Steering Committee also directed a review and handling of unfinished and prolonged projects that are wasting state and social resources. This includes, first and foremost, the projects to build the second facilities of Bach Mai Hospital and Viet Duc Hospital; the project to address tidal flooding in Ho Chi Minh City; and renewable energy projects that have been constructed but not yet connected to the grid or put into operation.
Mr. Dang Van Dung, Deputy Head of the Central Internal Affairs Committee, provided this information at the press conference.

Furthermore, Mr. Dang Van Dung stated that since the 26th meeting of the Steering Committee (August 14th), the relevant agencies have made many efforts, coordinated closely and smoothly, and strictly implemented the conclusions of the meetings of the Steering Committee and its Standing Committee.
The fight against corruption and negative practices continues to be implemented vigorously, resolutely, persistently, without interruption, without any forbidden areas, and without exceptions.
Specifically, Party committees and inspection committees at all levels will focus on inspecting and strictly handling Party organizations, cadres, and Party members who violate regulations related to corruption and negative cases, as concluded by the Steering Committee.
The Central Inspection Commission has focused on inspecting and directing inspections of Party organizations and Party members related to the cases at Phuc Son Group and Thuan An Group; completed inspections related to AIC Company; through inspections, it has processed or recommended disciplinary action against 247 Party organizations and 441 Party members, and transferred 26 cases to the investigative agency for handling according to its authority.
"The Politburo, the Secretariat, and the Central Inspection Committee have disciplined six high-ranking officials under the management of the Politburo and the Secretariat; bringing the total number of high-ranking officials disciplined since the beginning of the year to 52; of which, 48 officials were disciplined for their involvement in cases and incidents under the supervision and direction of the Steering Committee," Mr. Dung said.
In addition, law enforcement agencies nationwide have initiated investigations into 734 cases involving 1,681 defendants, prosecuted 591 cases involving 1,479 defendants, and conducted first-instance trials in 1,002 cases involving 2,703 defendants for corruption, economic, and official misconduct offenses.
Specifically, regarding cases and incidents under the supervision and direction of the Steering Committee, investigations have been concluded in 4 cases/58 defendants; supplementary investigations have been concluded in 1 case/9 defendants; indictments have been issued in 4 cases/52 defendants; 3 cases/290 defendants have been tried at the first instance; 3 cases/12 defendants have been tried at the appellate level; 1 new case/5 defendants has been initiated, and 22 additional defendants have been prosecuted in several cases…
The Deputy Head of the Central Internal Affairs Commission emphasized that the work of detecting and handling corruption and negative practices at the local and grassroots levels continues to be strengthened.
"Since the 26th Session, localities have initiated new prosecutions in 656 cases/1,367 defendants for corruption, economic, and official misconduct crimes, including 169 cases/347 defendants for corruption crimes. This brings the total number of newly initiated corruption cases in localities from the beginning of 2024 to 613 cases/1,350 defendants (an increase of more than 70 cases compared to the same period last year)," Mr. Dung informed.
In addition, according to Mr. Dung, the authorities continue to detect and strictly punish many officials and Party members involved in corruption and negative practices within agencies responsible for preventing and combating corruption and negative practices. Since the beginning of the year, more than 160 officials in these agencies have been prosecuted for corruption and negative practices.
