| Youth Union members and youths join forces to clean up after floods |
The "warriors" in green shirts
In late October and early November, Hue suffered historic floods that left many public works, hospitals, schools and streets submerged in mud and garbage.
At Chu Van An Secondary School (Thuan Hoa Ward), the water had just receded from the previous evening, leaving a layer of mud about 20cm deep in the yard. The classrooms on the first floor were no better, tables and chairs that had been soaked in flood water for many days were now covered in mud. From early morning, more than 70 Youth Union members of the University of Foreign Languages, Hue University were present here to join teachers and soldiers in cleaning up. Some raked mud, some sprayed water, some carried and collected garbage. Everyone was urgent and enthusiastic, their hands and feet were dirty but their smiles were always bright.
Having just taken a break after gathering tables and chairs in the hallway to clean up, student Nguyen Phuong Thao shared: “I live in the school dormitory so I did not suffer any damage. When I heard that the Youth Union was calling for participation in supporting the cleanup after the flood, I immediately signed up with the hope of contributing a small part to Hue City - the place I consider my second hometown.”
Joining the youths to clean up after the third flood in early November on Dong Da Street (Thuan Hoa Ward), I had the opportunity to chat with a second-year student from the University of Education, Hue University. What impressed me about Le Minh Quan was his working spirit when he carefully sorted plastic waste into a separate corner to avoid clogging the drainage system.
“Although I was not born and raised here, I always consider Hue as my second home. From then on, I realized that I needed to contribute my youth to clean up the city to restore its beauty, which is also to help the place where I am studying to regain its original poetic appearance,” Le Minh Quan confided.
Integrating many meaningful movements and models
According to information from the Hue City Youth Union, following the direction of the City Party Committee and the City People's Committee, the Standing Committee of the City Youth Union mobilized 59 youth volunteer teams with more than 4,600 members and more than 31,200 participants in support activities at schools, roads and residential areas heavily affected by floods. The core force is the Youth Union of wards, communes and universities and colleges in the city. The activities were organized simultaneously, on a large scale and effectively, associated with the "Green Sunday" movement and the models "Bright - green - clean - beautiful roads", "Green - clean - bright schools".
With the motto "Where the water recedes, clean up", in just two weeks of peak implementation, the city's Youth Union force cleaned up more than 350 schools, 40 main roads in the city center and hundreds of alleys and lanes. Thereby, collecting about 50 tons of garbage and mud; repairing and cleaning thousands of desks, chairs, and school supplies; restoring the clean and beautiful appearance of flooded areas.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hoai, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the city, Secretary of the Hue City Youth Union shared: “Integrating the clean-up campaign after floods with environmental protection movements and models not only helps optimize resources but also creates a strong spread in the community. Thereby, the Youth Union not only contributes to effectively overcoming the consequences of natural disasters but also raises awareness of environmental protection and building a civilized urban lifestyle in each citizen. This is also an opportunity for the city's youth to promote their pioneering role and sense of responsibility for the community, continuing to affirm their mark in social security activities.”
In order to mobilize a large number of young people to join forces, Hue City Youth Union has proactively deployed information and propaganda work on activities to prevent and combat heavy rains and floods and work to overcome the consequences synchronously on the information system of the Union from the fanpage "Hue City Youth Union", the City Youth Union website, to the social networking sites of the Youth Union - Young Pioneers in the area. Since then, many articles, images, and video clips have been posted, spreading the spirit of shock and enthusiasm of the city's youth in the work to overcome the consequences of floods, contributing to spreading positive energy in the community.
The Youth Union branches simultaneously launched a clean-up campaign to overcome the consequences of storms and floods in conjunction with the “Green Sunday” movement, calling on young union members, students and residents to join in general cleaning in residential areas, streets, schools and community centers. In addition, 40/40 youth volunteer teams from commune and ward Youth Unions went directly to each affected area to propagate and mobilize people to collect, classify and treat waste, limiting the risk of environmental pollution and disease outbreaks after floods.
