The Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports , in collaboration with the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association and Long Bien District, organized the 2023 Festival of Performances of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: Tug-of-War Rituals and Games, on November 17-18.
This is the first time the event has been organized to strengthen connections and exchanges between communities practicing the Heritage of Tug-of-War Rituals and Games in Vietnam and countries with UNESCO-listed heritage.

The festival featured the participation of nearly 500 artisans and practitioners of the tug-of-war ritual and game from the provinces of Bac Ninh, Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc, Hanoi city, and Dangjin city (Chungcheongnam, South Korea).
The 2023 Festival of Tug-of-War Rituals and Games includes a series of events taking place parallel to and simultaneously with the Hanoi Creative Design Festival 2023.
On November 17th, a seminar on heritage education in tug-of-war with the Gijisi Tug-of-War Association (Dangjin City, South Korea) will be held at the Hanoi Museum, with the participation of over 50 delegates from the Gijisi Tug-of-War Association (Dangjin City, South Korea), museums, historical sites, and universities in Hanoi.
The seminar aimed to share and exchange experiences in organizing educational activities on intangible cultural heritage in general, and the Tug-of-War ritual and game in particular.
At the event, the Gijisi Tug-of-War Museum will donate its Tug-of-War Education Box to the Hanoi Museum, showcase the Gijisi Tug-of-War ritual and game heritage of Korea, and offer hands-on activities for the public, students, and young people.
On the same day, November 17th, the exhibition "Sharing One Thread," showcasing panels, articles, and images introducing the value, significance, and forms of the tug-of-war ritual and game in four countries (Cambodia, Philippines, South Korea, and Vietnam), will be held at Tran Vu Temple, Thach Ban Ward, Long Bien District.
On November 18th, the International Seminar on Preserving and Promoting the Tug-of-War Rituals and Games in Contemporary Life also took place at Tran Vu Temple.
The event also included an exchange and demonstration of tug-of-war rituals and games, with the participation of the Gijisi Tug-of-War Association (Dangjin City, South Korea) and seven tug-of-war communities in Vietnam, including: seated tug-of-war at Tran Vu Temple (Long Bien District, Hanoi); tug-of-war in Xuan Lai village (Soc Son District, Hanoi); tug-of-war in Ngai Khe village (Phu Xuyen District, Hanoi); tug-of-war in Huu Chap village (Bac Ninh City, Bac Ninh Province); double tug-of-war in Huong Canh town (Binh Xuyen District, Vinh Phuc Province); tug-of-war in Hoa Loan village (Vinh Tuong District, Vinh Phuc Province); and tug-of-war of the Tay ethnic community (Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province).
In 2015, the tug-of-war ritual and game in Cambodia, the Philippines, South Korea, and Vietnam was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
