On December 19, the Standing Office of the Government Human Rights Steering Committee in coordination with the World and Vietnam Newspaper organized the Workshop "Foreign information on human rights in the new situation".
The workshop is one of a series of activities in a high-profile campaign to promote Vietnam's achievements in ensuring human rights on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of World Human Rights Day (December 10, 1948 - December 10, 2024).
Speaking at the workshop, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet, Deputy Head of the Government Human Rights Steering Committee, highly appreciated the significance and practical value of the event, especially when Vietnam has just announced its re-election to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2026-2028 term. Talking about the importance of communication and foreign information on human rights, Mr. Viet quoted Uncle Ho's question: "That is the job to make those who do not understand us understand us, those who understand us love us, those who hate us hate us less, and those who hate us and cannot give up, at least be less aggressive."
According to Mr. Viet, currently, along with the country's great achievements, communication on human rights and foreign information have been strongly implemented with the attention, direction, and participation of the entire political system. However, foreign information work on human rights is facing many problems, which need to be frankly acknowledged and jointly found solutions such as: only focusing on the work of fighting and refuting; not really doing a good job of spreading information to politicians and citizens of countries, Vietnamese communities abroad; information work on issues related to human rights is still slow, passive in the face of information from foreign press, social networks and objective impacts from the international and regional situation.
Therefore, according to Mr. Viet, there needs to be “new ways of doing things”, both creative and sensitive to foreign affairs, and regular and unceasing so that the world can better understand Vietnam. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen cooperation with international organizations and foreign press in the field of foreign communication to fight for and protect human rights in Vietnam, thereby promoting the national image, raising international awareness of the human rights situation in Vietnam and building an environment of fair dialogue in international forums.
During the workshop, central and local foreign information management agencies, press agencies, researchers and scholars related to foreign information work and human rights work exchanged policies and academics, discussed new and effective ways to implement foreign information work on human rights in the new context. The workshop also attracted many opinions and proposed practical solutions to promote foreign information in the field of human rights, ensuring a lively, attractive communication effect, widely spreading information about Vietnam's efforts in ensuring human rights to the world.
In his concluding remarks at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Truong Son, Editor-in-Chief of The Gioi Va Viet Nam Newspaper, hoped that the workshop would be a useful reference channel for those working in foreign information, specializing in human rights, so that they can continue to be flexible and creative in their media products to spread the image of the country and people of Vietnam to international friends. “In the new era of the nation, human rights and civil rights will continue to be cared for and guaranteed by the Party and State, contributing to affirming the stature and prosperous development of Vietnam in the international arena, creating a foundation for the country to accelerate and grow strongly,” said Mr. Son.
