Pentagon signs $200 million contract with OpenAI

VHO - The Pentagon announced on June 16 that OpenAI - the company that develops an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot application called ChatGPT - has just won a $200 million contract with the US Department of Defense to provide AI tools.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the contract requires OpenAI to develop “advanced AI capabilities at the prototype level to address significant national security threats in both the operational and combat domains.”

The project will be implemented primarily in the Washington, D.C. area and is expected to be completed by July 2026.

Earlier in April, the White House Office of Management and Budget issued new guidance requiring federal agencies to ensure the government and the public benefit from a competitive AI market in the US. However, this guidance does not apply to systems related to defense and national security.

As for OpenAI, last week the company announced it had reached $10 billion in revenue, putting it on track to meet its 2025 target amid a boom in AI applications. In March, OpenAI announced plans to raise $40 billion in a SoftBank-led funding round that valued the company at $300 billion. By the end of the first quarter, the platform had reached 500 million weekly active users, a dream number for many other companies.
