A rare but unacceptable incident occurred during the drawing ceremony for the 2025 Southeast Asian U19 Futsal Championship , when the Organizing Committee mistakenly used the Chinese flag instead of the Vietnamese flag .
The event was held on October 28 in Thailand, and was livestreamed on the fanpage of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) . The draw ceremony was attended by FAT Vice President, Mr. Adisak Benjasiriwan and Mr. Surasak Meemanee, Head of the tournament organizing committee .
The confusion about the national flag in this solemn ceremony has made Vietnamese fans angry, because this is a ceremonial mistake, showing disrespect for an ASEAN member country.
At the draw ceremony of the 2025 Southeast Asian U19 Futsal Championship, 7 teams participated and were divided into two groups: Group A: Thailand (seeded in Group A), Vietnam, Brunei; Group B: Indonesia (seeded in Group B), Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia.
Thailand and Indonesia were selected as the seeds for the two groups respectively. The tournament will take place from December 23 to 29, 2025 at the Nonthaburi Provincial Gymnasium (Thailand) .
On the VFF homepage, many fans have voiced their request not to attend the tournament to protest the FAT's mistake with the Vietnamese flag. On the VFF side, the federation's leaders are preparing to send a letter about this mistake to AFF and FAT.
At the same time and location, the 2025 Southeast Asian U16 Futsal Championship will also be held with the participation of 5 teams: Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Brunei .
The tournament applies a round robin format, with the top two teams advancing to the final and the two teams behind competing for third place.
