Schedule for the 2025 Men's World Volleyball Championship on September 12th - Graphic: AN BINH
This is also the only match taking place on the opening day of the 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship. This is quite unusual, as it's rare for a volleyball tournament to only hold one match on the opening day. At the previous Women's Volleyball World Championship in Thailand, there were as many as seven matches on the first day.
Even the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) has caused considerable confusion in announcing match times. Initially, the FIVB's Volleyball World website listed the start time for the match between the Philippines and Tunisia as 4:30 PM (Vietnam time). They then changed it to 5:00 PM, but now it has been changed again to 6:00 PM.
But putting aside the scheduling problems, the match between the Philippines and Tunisia holds special significance. It marks the return of the Men's World Volleyball Championship, which brings together a host of strong teams and bright stars.
For the Philippines, this is also their first time participating in this tournament. Of course, this is also due to their being chosen as the host nation, thus automatically securing a spot in the competition.
But with their efforts in investing in infrastructure and their bid to host the event, the Philippines somewhat deserves this ticket. However, the Southeast Asian representative also needs to prepare for the possibility of suffering heavy defeats.
The Philippine men's volleyball team is currently ranked 82nd in the world, much lower than Southeast Asian teams that did not participate in the tournament such as Indonesia (ranked 51st), Thailand (58th), and Vietnam (59th).
Meanwhile, Tunisia is ranked 43rd. Clearly, the Philippines is quite weak compared to the general standard. Therefore, it's difficult to expect them to cause any surprises in this year's tournament.
The match schedule may change depending on the organizers' arrangements.
