On Friday (June 20), European Leagues President Claudius Schafer, Vice President Mathieu Moreuil, and Secretary General Alberto Colombo met with Glenn Micallef, European Commissioner for Youth, Culture and Sport , to share their views on the pressing challenges facing football. They also submitted a joint complaint (with FIFPRO) against FIFA to the European Commission.
This complaint stems from FIFA's unilateral decisions regarding the scheduling of international matches, including the organization of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. As is known, in order to increase its influence at the club level, compete with the UEFA Champions League, and generate economic benefits, FIFA decided to expand the FIFA Club World Cup to 32 teams, then hold it in the same summer as the World Cup.
The world's most powerful football governing body has not consulted with the European league federations, a point recently emphasized by La Liga president Javier Tebas. For a long time, FIFA's unilateral and coercive actions have faced strong opposition from many quarters, as they disrupt league schedules and seriously affect players' health.
According to the European Leagues' argument, "FIFA's regulations and conduct do not meet the requirements of EU law, harming the economic interests of national football leagues and the health and safety of players in the European football system." Therefore, they argue that "a legal challenge to the European Commission is necessary to protect European football, which plays a key role in global culture and entertainment."
Last October, the European Leagues, FIFPRO, and La Liga also claimed that FIFA "violated European Union law," and subsequently filed a complaint with the EU's antitrust regulator.
