The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on December 1 that China is studying Russia's methods to counter Western sanctions.

According to the newspaper, Beijing has set up a special “interdisciplinary group” to study the impact of sanctions on Russia and prepare regular reports for the country's leadership.
The purpose of such activities is to learn from Russia's experience in minimizing the impact of Western restrictive measures.
To this end, Chinese officials are said to regularly visit Moscow and meet with representatives of the Central Bank, the Ministry of Finance and other Russian agencies.
China is also interested in Russia's "incentives to develop domestic production" in the face of sanctions pressure, one of the sources said.
According to the WSJ , Beijing may be concerned that if the Taiwan issue escalates, the US and its allies could impose sanctions on China similar to those imposed on Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.
The source noted that the activity of this “inter-agency group” does not mean that China is preparing for a conflict.
China's Foreign Ministry told the newspaper that Beijing is committed to "normal exchanges and cooperation with all countries in the world, including Russia, on the basis of equality and mutual benefit."
